lasko Popa\n\nEarth Erect \n4 \n# Earth Erect\n\nEarth Erect is the most recent work by a major Europeanpoet, the Yugoslav Vasko Popa.Born in I922 in Grebenac,Banat,Vasko Popa now lives in Belgrade where he works aseditor for a publishing house. He has published fourprevious books of verse. His poetic achievement has beenrecognized by such major awards as the Austrian State Prizefor Literature, and his poems have become well known inEnglish translation through the publication of his SelectedPoems(Penguin,I969).Vasko Popa has twice appeared atthe Poetry International festival in London,in I969 andagain in I973.He also visited the International WritingProgram at Iowa in I970. \nTed Hughes writes of Earth Erect:'This is a greatcelebration of Vasko Popa's national roots. His universallanguage of X-ray images works here as beautifully as ever. When the poetic texture of the verbal code is cancelled(though these are lucid, skilful translations)we are not leftwith rhetorical mysteries or waywardness.Instead, wehave solid hieroglyphic objects, meaningful in a direct way, simultaneously solid and spiritual,plain-statement andvisionary, reminiscent of Kekule's whirling dream snake. It is unique art,and lucky with its translator.' \nThe cover shows the symbol for Earth Erect designed byDušan Ristić.Photograph of Vasko Popa by Horst Tappe \n50 \n0151801 \nEarth Erect \nPG 1419.26
