Please delete these notes before printing  \nEarly Maize Seedlings  \nYou can give maize seedlings an early start and save time between crops.  \nTake the seeds out of old, dry maize cobs, and keep them.  \nCut the old, dry maize cobs into sections. The sections should be 2 to 2½ inches (5-6 cm) long.  \nMix some manure with water until it is runny.  \nSoak the cut sections in this liquid manure and leave them soaking for about a month.  \nRemove the maize cob sections from the liquid manure when they are slightly rotten but still have their shape.  \nPress 2 or 3 maize seeds into each section of soaked maize cob.  \nPlace the sections of maize cob upright in your seedling bed. Make sure that they have the seeds at the top!  \nCover the seedling bed with about half an inch  \n(1 cm) of fine soil or compost.  \nSprinkle the seedling bed well with water.  \nIn dry or cool weather cover the seedling bed with a layer of straw or black plastic sheeting.  \nWhen the seeds start to grow, remove the straw or black plastic sheeting.
