Dynamic Contemplation\n\nTwo problems face us concerning the contemplative life in theChurch today.First,is there really a need for it,or should it beabandoned in favor of newer forms of the religious life?Secondly,if there is a need for the contemplative life, then the problem isthe structures in which we embody it.We must abandon those oldstructures which hamper contemplative life in fulfilling its true rolein the Church today, and we must find new structures which willmake it fully effective in carrying out this role. \nI propose to show that the contemplative life is needed in theChurch today because contemplation itself is urgently needed inthe life of God's People. \nWhat the contemplative life ought to be today needs to bededuced from a deep understanding of contemplation as pertainingto the very essence of Christianity, and therefore, from the needof each and every Christian for contemplation. \n## REPROACHES AGAINST THE CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE\n\nOur best clue as to why the contemplative life is needed isthe very reproaches brought against it.If the life is so widelycondemned,it is precisely because so much is expected of it.With-out realizing it,the accusers had hoped great things from con-templatives and were disappointed in not finding what they expected. \nThe very reproaches against the contemplative life,then,in-dicate what mankind expects from this life, what the reproachersneed and are seeking. The contemplative life must manifest con-vincingly that it does have and offers all that they are seeking. \nBeginning with some of the contemporary accusations againstit, then, let us speak of contemplation itself and its essential rolein Christianity—what it has to offer to all Christians. \nContemplation is accused of being too static, concerned onlywith gazing at the past, gazing at changeless truth and beauty. It seems to have nothing to offer to contemporary man,who hasa very dynamic view of the world. All things are in evolutionary \nprocess,moving forward in a marvelous progression, and it is man'sresponsibility to be actively involved in forwarding this process. The future is all important! \nAgain,the contemplative is accused of being too individualistic,of being wrapped up in a selfish\"me and Jesus spirituality,\"ofhaving no concern for his fellowmen. He is not human enough. He is uncommitted to the responsibility of being actively involvedin building a more human world. \nThese accusations ","cbCainO2K1B9xMyz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainO2K1B9xMyz","pdf",2223180,64,"English","# Dynamic Contemplation\n## REPROACHES AGAINST THE
