It provides demographic profiles and statistical characteristics of test scores, supporting retrospective analysis for specific test versions or defined time windows. The report supplements the DET Technical Manual by focusing on test-taker attributes and score properties, while highlighting limitations from convenience sampling and cautioning against comparisons across reporting periods, especially before versus after key July 1, 2024 subscores updates.","Duolingo English Test: Demographic and Score Properties of Test Takers \nDuolingo Research Report \nOctober 22, 2024 (41 pages) [https://englishtest.duolingo.com/research](https://englishtest.duolingo.com/research) \nAllison Michalowski∗ , Ramsey Cardwell∗ , Steven Nydick∗ , and Ben Naismith∗ \nAbstract \nThe Duolingo English Test Demographic and Score Report provides test-taker demographics, properties of test scores, and statistical characteristics of the Duolingo English Test (DET) . This document is designed to be a retrospective analysis, with new reports created on an annual or semi-annual basis to offer insights into the profile of test takers for particular test versions or across a particular timespan. Moreover, this document is meant as a supplement to the DET Technical Manual, which primarily addresses the technical aspects of the test rather than attributes oftest takers. \nLast Update: October 22, 2024 \nKeywords \nDuolingo English Test, DET, test scores, demographics, assessment \nTable of contents \n1 Introduction 2 \n1.1 Data Interpretation and Limitations ............................................. 2 \n1.2 Report Uses ......................................................... 3 \n2 Data and Methods 3 \n3 Summary Statistics 4 \n4 Test-Taker Intent 7 \n5 First-Time and Repeat Test Sessions 16 \n6 Test-Taker Demographics 25 \n6.1 Gender ........................................................... 25 \n6.2 Age ............................................................. 29 \n6.3 First Language (L1) ..................................................... 33 \n6.4 Geographic Region ..................................................... 37 \n7 Conclusion 41 \n8 References 41 \n∗ Duolingo, Inc. \nCorresponding author: \nRamsey Cardwell, PhD \nDuolingo, Inc. 5900 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206, USA \nEmail: [englishtest-research@duolingo.com](englishtest-research@duolingo.com) \n1 Introduction \nThe Duolingo English Test (DET) is a measure of English language proficiency for communication and use in English-medium settings. It assesses a test taker’s ability to use linguistic skills that are required for speaking, writing, reading, and listening, as well as the integration of these skills needed for literacy, conversation, comprehension, and production. This report is intended as a supplement to the DET Technical Manual (Cardwell, Naismith, LaFlair, et al., 2024), which contains more information about the structure of the test and the theoretical framework for test construction. \nThis document provides additional evidence called for by the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (AERA et al., 2014), specifically Standard 6 referencing test scoring and interpretation, as well as Standard 7 referencing supporting documentation for test use. It presents demographic and score statistics across a variety of categories, such as gender, test-taker country, and test-taker intent. Unlike the DET Technical Manual, which documents the most recent version of the test, this report is merely a snapshot of test takers across a testing window, typically either those who took a specific test version or those who took the test during an annual or semi-annual period. Moreover, new versions of this document will not replace existing versions, so that interested users can compare test-taker demographics and score properties over time. \nNote that this report only includes data prior to the launch of individual subscores on July 1, 2024 . That launch also coincided with a change to the distribution of the integrated subscores described in this report. For this reason, subscore distributions and statistics presented herein should not be compared to those described in future reports, nor should they be used to interpret test results obtained since July 1, 2024 . Future reports will contain information on individual (i.e., speaking, writing, reading, listening) subscores instead of integrated (i.e., literacy, conversation, comprehen","cbCaip5rcCae9Rrq","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaip5rcCae9Rrq","pdf",2905876,3,1,41,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Data Interpretation and Limitations\n## Report Uses\n# Data and Methods\n# Summary Statistics\n# Test-Taker Intent\n# First-Time and Repeat Test Sessions\n# Test-Taker Demographics\n## Gender\n## Age\n## First Language (L1)\n## Geographic Region\n# Conclusion\n# References","[{\"question\":\"What does the report cover about DET test scores and test takers?\",\"answer\":\"It presents test-taker demographics and statistical characteristics of DET scores, including summary statistics and breakdowns by categories such as gender, age, first language, geography, and intent.\"},{\"question\":\"How should readers interpret the report’s demographic and score statistics?\",\"answer\":\"The report uses convenience samples, and test-taker choice can depend on legal, economic, regional, and timing factors.
