G. Holdier explores how characterizing different races in Dungeons & Dragons can imply that racial groups have essential, defining traits. The discussion examines why linking race to personality, worldview, or morality may harm members of targeted groups, even when the traits appear “positive.” It also asks how entertainment examples reinforce racial determinism and how research on implicit bias helps interpret race in D&D. G. Holdier \nAccording to the author, although the characterization of different races in D& D (dark elves, humans, orcs) as having essential properties (personality traits, worldviews, moral characters) may not directly harm individual players, it reinforces the idea that different human “races” are also fundamentally different. How might the idea that a person’s race at least partially determines that person’s character, tendencies, [etc. be](etc. be) harmful to members of a particular race? \nBut not all characteristics associated with particular races are inherently negative-for instance, Asian-Americans are often called part of a “model minority” in the U.S. and praised for being hard-working and intelligent. Why might even the association of a particular race with a “positive” property be objectionable? \nCan you think of other examples in the entertainment industry that reinforce the idea that one’s race at least partially determines one’s character? \nStudies on implicit bias have shown that, even if someone doesn’t consciously believe in things like racial stereotypes, they may still believe them unconsciously and act on them without realizing it. What might findings like this tell us about race in D& D? \n( If you would like to learn about your own implicit biases, you can visit Harvard’s Project Implicit website and take some of their Implicit Association Tests here: \n[https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.htm](https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html)[l](https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html)) \n©2021 Prindle Institute for Ethics","cbCaikRIA9zAHjyb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikRIA9zAHjyb","pdf",72049,"English","# Discussion Questions\n## Harm of Race-Based Characterization\n## Objections to “Positive” Racial Traits\n## Entertainment Industry Examples\n## Implicit Bias and Implications for D&D\n## Project Implicit Self-Assessment","[{\"question\":\"How can race-based characterization in Dungeons \\u0026 Dragons reinforce harmful ideas?\",\"answer\":\"It can strengthen the belief that different races are fundamentally different by treating character tendencies, worldviews, or morals as essential properties linked to race.\"},{\"question\":\"Why might even “positive” associations with a race be objectionable?\",\"answer\":\"Because race-based labeling still frames identity as determined by inherent traits, which can objectify or constrain how people are perceived and treated.\"},{\"question\":\"What do implicit bias studies suggest about race in D\\u0026D?\",\"answer\":\"They indicate that people may act on racial stereotypes unconsciously, so D\\u0026D depictions can influence beliefs and behaviors even without explicit endorsement.\"}]","Dungeons, Dragons, and Du Bois’ Race Problem - Essay Questions | PDF",1791269948]
