A learner’s licence must be obtained before a first-time driver can get on the road with a driving instructor to be taught the practical aspects of driving. \nBefore booking for the test, it is important that candidates prepare by studying the Official Road Code and any other relevant legislation material provided by the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing (DVDL). The applicant must also pay a fee of CI$25 to take the written test. \nThe DVDL has introduced a new way for candidates to take the written portion of the driving examination. Instead of using pen and paper as in the past, the written exam now uses a computerised touch screen system. \nThis method is a user-friendly, easier way for written driving test candidates to sit the exam and receive quicker results of their test. The system ensures the integrity and security of the testing process as no two tests are alike. Candidates are required to touch the screen to answer a series of multiple choice questions. \nThe test is in English and there’s an audio on a headset to assist applicants if they have reading difficulties or are dyslexic. However, applicants who are suffering from dyslexia must provide a letter from a registered medical practitioner or an independent person such as a teacher, to confirm their reading difficulty. It is important for applicants to inform the department when booking their theory test that they are suffering from any disabilities, so that provisions can be made to accommodate them on the day of the exam. \nThe department will continue to monitor/audit the system to ensure credibility and accuracy of the testing process. Amendments are made from time to time to take into account changes in legislation and driving conditions. Any changes to the tests will be published in advance. \nAn applicant must be 17 years or older to take the test, whether theory or practical. \nTouch to enlarge pictures or text (the screen allows you to \nreturn to the test) \nThis pop-up lets you confirm your \nanswer “YES” and proceed to the next question, OR touch“NO” and it lets you revisit the question. \nTouch this bar \nto increase or decrease the volume of the audio \nTouch this if you are unsure of the answer. You will be allowed to return to the question at the end of the test in the order it appeared. \nIndicates the current question number \nCurrent Question:1 / 40 \nAlerts the examiner that you require assistance \nTest No: \nElapsed Time: 00:20:00 Minutes \nCorrect: 32 \nTest Type: Group 2 Motorcars & trucks up to 8,500 lbs \nTime: 00:30:00 Minutes \nIncorrect: 0 Needed to pass: 32 \nIF THE APPLICANT SUCCESSFULLY PASSES THE WRITTEN TEST: \n• The applicant must complete, sign and date the appropriate application form. Parts A, B & D Application for a Driver’s Licence and complete Box B of licence group category (Groups 0, 1,1A, 2, 3 or 4) . \n• The examiner verifies the accuracy of information supplied by applicant. \n• The examiner completes the reverse of the form certifying pass and the percentage obtained on test, before having it signed and stamped. \n• The applicant hands the appropriate form to a licensing officer. THE FORM MUST BEAR THE DATE AND SIGNATURE OF THE APPLICANT IN ADDITION TO DATE, SIGNATURE AND STAMP OF THE EXAMINER AND PASS MARK OBTAINED. \n• The applicant pays a CI$60 fee for a learner’s licence (valid for 6 months) and is issued a CI Government receipt as proof of payment. \n• THE APPLICANT IS THEN ISSUED A LEARNER’S LICENCE. \nIF THE APPLICANT FAILS THE WRITTEN TEST: \nThe applicant may make a new application for a written test on the next available time or return at a later date to make an appointment after paying the prescribed fee of CI $25.00.
