This includes a 30-hour driver's ed course approved by the Iowa Department of Transportation and completion of at least 20 hours of driving practice with a parent or instructor. \nTraditional driver education programs are offered by both public schools and licensed private driver education companies, which are instructed by Iowa licensed classroom educators and DOT certified behind-the-wheel instructors in the State of Iowa. \nWhat are the options for students at Empowering Excellence Charter School? EECS Students have three options to obtain their driver’s license. \n1) Parent-Taught Driver’s Education: Any parent can now sign up to teach their kid how to drive. Anew law lets the parents of teenagers certify they've taught their child to drive, so the teen can take the tests to get a driver's license. More information can be found at: \n[https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverseducation/Parent-taught](https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverseducation/Parent-taught) \n2) School-Offered Driver’s Education Program: Every school district in Iowa must make a driver education course available to resident students except students who are open enrolled out of the district ( Iowa Code section 321.178) . School districts may charge tuition and fees for the driver education course that the districts make available ( Iowa Code section 282.6) . EECS students may be able to participate in driver’s education programs offered in their “home” school district. Contact your“home” school district to learn more about the options and the costs for these programs. \n3) Licensed Private Driver Education Companies: Private driver education companies serve many areas in Iowa. A location map showing these options can be found at: \n[https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverseducation/private-driver-education-schools](https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverseducation/private-driver-education-schools). \nPlease contact individual private driver education companies to learn more about the locations of their course offerings. \n4) Skip the Trip: [https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/skip-the-trip](https://iowadot.gov/mvd/driverslicense/skip-the-trip) This program allows students to take the web-based knowledge test that is required to obtain a driver’s instruction permit at a participating school or agency instead of making the trip to a DMV or local county treasurer’s office to complete the test. \nTo sign up for our options with EECS, please click HERE. \nAre there scholarships or financial aid available for families/students eligible for free and reduced lunch? Yes, Empowering Excellence Charter School students who are currently eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals and have a signed current year Waiver of Confidentiality on file with the school, may qualify for a fully waived or reduced price.
