Erickson’s distinctive approach to medical hypnosis and psychotherapy, grounded in respect for natural processes, indirect suggestion, therapeutic metaphors, and careful utilization of the unconscious. Traces Erickson’s personal influences, including polio, colorblindness, and dyslexia, and shows how these shaped his emphasis on brief, strategic, and solution-focused change. Outlines why hypnosis works through common trance states, conversational techniques, and five core principles used to guide clinicians.","DR . Erickson (1901-1980)? Dr. Erikson was an American psychiatrist who specialized in medical hypnosis and family therapy. He is known for his unconventional approach to psychotherapy. This includes his use of therapeutic metaphors, his ability to address therapeutic changes in relatively few sessions, utilization, and his very respectful approach to the unconscious mind. \nHis unique style was heavily influenced by his personal life. He was colorblind and for most of this life suffered from dyslexia. Also, his lifelong flight with polio became a major inspiration for his use of hypnotherapy. \nDoctor Erickson’s professional accomplishments were many. He founded the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. He was also very influential with the development of brief therapy, strategic family therapy, family systems therapy, solution focused brief therapy and Neuro-linguistic Programming. \nBefore I get too far, I want to point out the major difference between Erickson’s approach and that of the other hypnotists of his time. Most if not all hypnotists of his time used direct suggestion and an authoritarian approach to hypnosis. His chief rival David Elman is one clear example of the other approach. His approach by contrast was very indirect. For example, Elman may say “relax your mind\", Erickson would say “you may find your mind becoming more and more relaxed”. Erickson felt that the unconscious mind could dynamically become part of the solution. \nTherefore, his approach was extremely respectful to our natural processes. Utilization and metaphor came from this belief. \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nWHY USE HYPNOSIS: FROM MYTHS TO ADVANTAGES \nAt this point I want you to understand why Erickson was interested in hypnotherapy. From age seventeen when he almost died from polio, he learned to respect the use of his mind for the healing of his body. It was through the use of self-hypnosis, which he called autohypnosis, that he was able to manage his pain and to give himself suggestions for healing. His long struggle with polio gave him extensive time for introspection. \nAdditionally, this allowed him plenty of time to observe others. \nEver since my first day of training in hypnosis, I was told that it is impossible to hypnotize someone against their will. But since then not only have I learned David Elman’s waking hypnosis technique; I’ve also learned the power of conversational hypnosis as taught by Erickson. Although Erickson extensively used hypnosis during his early days working in mental asylums, he soon used his mastery of hypnotic communication skills rather than using a formal trance induction. This means that despite what I was always told to explain to a subject during a pre-talk that they could not be hypnotized against their will, I soon developed an arsenal of techniques that did the opposite. \nI became fascinated with Erickson’s belief that the unconscious mind was always listening. Therefore, the trance state was not required. Suggestions could be made having an impact on the unconscious mind if they had some resistance. Note that this is very similar to Elman saying that ","cbCaids0nMkIsLk3","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaids0nMkIsLk3","pdf",900683,4,1,14,"English","en",105,"# Introduction\n## Why use hypnosis: From myths to advantages\n## The five basic principles","[{\"question\":\"Who was Dr. Milton H.
