It describes how learners prepare for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) under extreme constraints, supported by NGO-run schools and dedicated teachers, yet still face university admission rejection. The exclusion is framed as undermining justice, equality, human rights, and national economic potential. It calls for inclusive admissions, targeted financial aid, support services, and cross-institution OGOS 2024(JUMAAT)BERITA HARIAN□UTUSAN M'SIAN.STRAITS TIME \n# DON'T DENY STATELESSCHILDREN EDUCATION\n\nIST 2318l₂4 Pg.16 \nNthe 21st century, educationis often touted as a universalright but the reality of state-less children tells a differentstory. \nI have had the privilege of be-coming acquainted with some ofthese children who struggled toprepare for the recent Sijil Pela-jaran Malaysia(SPM)examina-tion without access to formal ed-ucation. \nThese children crammed theirSPM preparation into nights andweekends, juggling odd jobs tosupport their families as soleproviders. \nDespite huge challenges, andwith the support of exceptionalteachers at their schools run bynon-governmental organisa-tions,these children demonstrat-ed incredible resilience and ded-ication. \nTheir ability to overcome theseobstacles and excel in their SPMexaminations is a testament totheir qualities and unwaveringdetermination. \nHowever,even with the evi-dence of their hard work, asshown by their SPM certificates, our universities are unable to ac-cept them. \nThis exclusion not only ham- \npers the potential of these indi- \nviduals but also contradicts thefundamental purpose of univer-sities:to advance knowledge,fos-ter innovation and contribute tosocietal progress. \nWe are not only perpetuatingcycles of poverty and marginal-isation but also failing to upholdthe principles of justice andequality that underpin the edu-cation system. \nThis is a critical issue that de-mands immediate and thought-ful action to align educationalpractices with the ideals of in-clusivity and fairness. \nStateless individuals in Malay-sia face significant barriers toemployment and education, which in turn affects their eco-nomic potential. \nExperts say that denying state-less individuals access to educa-tion and employment opportu-nities,not only wastes their per-sonal potentials, but alsodamages the broader economy. \nBy integrating stateless indi-viduals into the education sys-tem and the workforce,we couldharness a skilled and productivelabour force, ultimately boostingeconomic growth and reducingsocial inequality. \nBy opening(or creating)doorsto stateless children, universities \ncan send a powerful messageabout their commitment to socialjustice and human rights. \nThis is not just about grantingaccess to education;it's about af-firming the dignity of every in-dividual,regardless of national-ity or documentation status \nOvercoming the barriers pre-venting stateless children fromaccessing higher education re-quires a fundamental overhaul ofadmission policies to ensure in-clusivity,provision of targeted fi-nancial aid,and development ofsupport services tailored to theneeds of stateless students. \nConcurrently,the authoritiesand policymakers must collabo-rate witheducational institutionsto foster anenvironment that em-braces and supports the inclu-sion of stateless children withinthe education system. \nWe can unlock their potentialand enhance our collectiveprogress. This is a necessary com-mitment to both human rightsand societal advancement./ \nDR SITI NURNADILLAMOHAMADJAMIL \nDepartment of English Languageand
