Through the author’s analysis of class relations in a Malay village, contradictions in accounts of land, wages, reputation, and technological change are treated as patterned responses to differing relationships with authority. The text introduces the idea of public and hidden transcripts, showing how subordinate groups may adapt speech to audience and situation, and how researchers can triangulate discourses.","Domination \nPreface \nTHE IDEA BEHIND THIS BOOK developed as a result of my persistent and ratherslow-witted efforts to make sense of class relations in a Malay village.I washearing divergent accounts of land transactions, wage rates, social reputa-tions,and technological change.By itself, this was not so surprising inasmuchas different villagers had conflicting interests.More troubling was the fact thatthe same villagers were occasionally contradicting themselves! It was sometime before it dawned on me that the contradictions arose especially, but notuniquely, among the poorer and most economically dependent villagers.Thedependency was as important as the poverty, since there were several fairlyautonomous poor whose expressed opinions were both consistent andindependent. \nThe contradictions, moreover, had a kind of situational logic to them. When I confined the issue to class relations alone—one of many issues—itseemed that the poor sang one tune when they were in the presence of the richand another tune when they were among the poor. The rich too spoke one wayto the poor and another among themselves. These were the grossest distinc-tions;many finer distinctions were discernible depending on the exact com-position of the group talking and,of course, the issue in question.Soon Ifound myself using this social logic to seek out or create settings in which Icould check one discourse against another and,so to speak, triangulate myway into unexplored territory. The method worked well enough for mylimitedpurposes, and the results appeared in Weapons of the Weak:Everyday Forms ofPeasant Resistance(Yale University Press,I985),especially pp.284-89. \nOnce attuned more closely to how
