The Lamido could not rule over this big territory alone. He, therefore, chose some people to help him in special places of this enormous kingdom . These assistants ordogari were not kings or chiefs, but they could perform certain duties that the Lamido would perform. Other very important duties had to be referrred to the Lamido.  \nAmong the men chosen as assistants of the King was Dogari Hamadou . Like other assistants, he used to guard the palace. Like them, he frquently went to visit his compound.  \nIt was late afternoon in the month of April. The sun was up. Everywhere was very hot. The village inhabitants sat in the shade of trees to cool off while waiting for sunset.  \nDogari Hamadou and his colleagues lay under the big neem tree in the front courtyard of the palace . It was more confortable to be in the shade of this great evergreen tree.  \nThis time of the year was the period of suumay. Suumay is a time of fasting and abstinence for Muslims.  \nAt this time, believers neither eat nor drink from morning to evening for thirty days. They spend most of their time in prayer and meditation. At 6:30p.m . every evening, they break the fast by drinking water and eating food.  \nAfter breaking the fast one evening, Dogari Hamadou said the maghrib or evening prayer with his friends. Then, he decided to go home to see his wife and children. It was eight o'clock at night. The moon and the stars were shining brightly in the sky.  \nA soft gentle wind blew across the village. People and animals in the village loved this breeze. It made them feel comfortable.  \nDogari Hamadou and his friends were on guard that day. They were to stay awake all night, keeping watch over the palace.  \nDogari knew that after visiting his family, he had to come back quickly to continue guarding the palace.  \nHe decided to use a small path that led from the palace to his house. There was grass on either side of this path. It was the shortest road to quickly get to his compound and back.  \nDogari Hamadou took his bow and arrows with him. Every dogari had a spear or a bow and arrows .  \nHalf way between his compound and the palace, Dogari Hamadou noticed something lying across the path.  \nAt first, he thought it was a dry stick. He looked carefully to be sure . Then he realized that it was a snake. It was big and long.  \nThe snake moved a little. Dogari became afraid. He thought of running back to the palace . But, he knew that his friends will laugh at him.  \n\"A dogari should not be afraid. He must have a strong heart.
