Fame, fortune, or brilliant streaks of genius defined other people’s lives. I, on the other hand, have lived practically my whole life believing I was pretty ordinary.  \nMy mother could argue it’s all in how you look at things. Being common in itself could be a sign of my own stroke of luck, she might say. She, for instance, talked proudly of how lucky she was to have been ugly all her life. As I saw it, she couldn’t have been more wrong about her looks, but there was no talking her out of her perception.  \n“If you too beautiful, you know, it can be very unlucky. Oh, the tragedies that happen,” she’d say to me from time to time in her broken English, with a slow shake of her head and a faraway gaze. It was instantaneous, how she could transport herself into a memory from so long ago. I had to assume her thoughts had taken her back to her post-war childhood in a ravaged Korea of the 1950s, when her own survival relied on the merciful sacrifices made by her sister, only a few years her senior.  \nJust as instantaneously, she would return to the present, sigh, and quicken her eyes toward me. She’d add,“Yup, I so lucky I have ugly face! Too pretty attract lots of problems you know.” Then, she’d say no more.  \nI never quite knew how to take those final remarks on the topic or her warning stare afterward, which would linger on my face as if in search of some sign of understanding. Her eyes rested on mine for indeterminable minutes as she waited for a suitable reaction.
