When a GSW case arrives with an unforgiving timeline, Monroe’s focus slips at a critical moment and his mistake instantly strips him from the center of action. Dr. Vega resets the line with surgical calm, leaving Monroe to confront humiliation, shame, and a complicated need to earn her direction again while the aftermath of the trauma lingers.","[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nThis is a work of fiction. I leaned on the counter outside Station C and drank the cold coffee anyway. \nAcross the floor, Dr. Vega stood like nothing ever touched her. Hairslicked back, posture perfect, hands tucked into her coat pockets like she owned the building. She probably did. Everyone, myself included, deferred to her immediately, without question. \nShe turned and our eyes met for half a second. \nThen the trauma pager chirped. GSW inbound, chest wound. ETA two minutes. \nThe quiet snapped. \nI dumped my coffee and followed her into Trauma 2, heart pounding. It wasn’t the blood. It was her voice—low, clipped, surgical. The sound made my knees buzz. \n“Monroe,” she said, snapping on gloves.“You’re with me. IV access, right side. Use a fourteen. No toys.” \n“Understood,” I said, louder than I meant to. \nDr. Vega didn’t smile. She never smiled. \nI pulled gloves on and tried to focus, but my skin already felt too tight. Every time I worked with her, it was like this. Sharp and hot and barely \nmanageable. It wasn’t just that I wanted to impress her. I wanted her to tell me what to do. \nI wanted to please her. \nThe double doors banged open a minute later. Young male, maybe early twenties, pale as hell and drenched in blood. Paramedics rattled off vitals—BP dropping, GSW just left of sternum, soaked through two dressings already. \nDr. Vega didn’t flinch.“O-negative wide open. Bag him. Monroe, get the line.” \nI moved fast. The tray was ready, needle uncapped. I found the vein while she cut away the gauze—hands steady as stone. \nFocus. Right side. Big vein. Just like she said. \nBut my hands were sweating inside the gloves. The tray tilted. I lunged to stop it—and fuck. My arm swept across the sterile drape. \nIt happened fast. I froze mid-reach. \n“Stop,” Dr. Vega said, voice sharp. \nI jerked back like I’d been shocked. \n“Field’s compromised,” she said, already stepping in. “Back up. I’ll reset.” \nShe grabbed a new tray, reset the line in seconds, and didn’t look at me once while she did it. \nI stepped away from the gurney, heat crawling up my neck. The room felt small. Too many people. I could hear myself breathing and hated that I couldn’t slow it down. \nI tried to stay useful, grabbing gauze, cutting tape, cleaning what I could, but I wasn’t in the center anymore. \nDr. Vega stabilized the patient quickly and carefully, and when the patient was wheeled upstairs to surgery, she peeled off her gloves one at a time. Snap. Snap. Dropped them in the bin without a glance. \nShe walked out without a word. \nI stayed. Burning. Then started cleaning. \nIt wasn’t my job, and no one asked, but I couldn’t leave yet. The counter was streaked with blood, and the med tray I’d screwed up sat like a crime scene in miniature. I scrubbed harder than necessary, let the sting of antiseptic burn my fingers through the gloves. \nAround me, the room emptied. The monitor beeped its last idle rhythm before someone powered it down.
