Trainee Doctors must follow this with a two year Foundation Programme working in hospitals, before they can even begin to specialise. Both professions have continuous further training throughout their working lives \nWill you achieve the grades required? \nCompetition for both these courses is intense. \nGCSEs are very important – you should have mostly A*/A grades. \nAt A2 level, offers tend to be A*AA – AAA. \nAll Universities for Medicine, and some for Dentistry, ask you to take an additional Selection Test – UKCAT & also possibly BMAT. \nConsider also: \nAre you a hard-working student? (Be honest!) \nHow well do you cope under pressure, and in stressful situations? Are you prepared for a lot of hard work and exams? \nAre you squeamish? \nDo you like working with people; could you show evidence of this? \nHave you done any work shadowing, or relevant voluntary work? \nDentists also need excellent manual dexterity. \nApplying Through UCAS \nYou must apply early – by Mid October. \nYou can only apply for a maximum of 4 courses for Medicine or Dentistry. You can leave the 5th choice blank, or put a suitable alternative course. \nLook carefully at the courses offered. Consider the full range of Medical Schools, not just the London ones. \nBe prepared to only get 1 University offer – this often happens. If you really want to be a Doctor or Dentist, you’ll go anywhere. \nThe BMAT and UK CAT \nTests designed to be fairer than A levels, testing aptitude rather than knowledge to try to find the best potential doctors. \nUK CAT is used by the majority of university medical schools. \nBMAT is used by Oxford, Cambridge, UCL and Imperial although more are moving towards this – Bristol and Warwick will be using it from 2013. \nDifferent universities use it in different ways. Some look at overall scores, some at subsections, some only interview those who have got over a certain mark, others just use it as a guide. Best advice is to do both test and then apply according to results – can use scores to own advantage. \n[www.ukcat.ac.uk](www.ukcat.ac.uk) \nHow to maximise your chances of getting a place? \n􀁸 Relevant work experience is essential \n– demonstrates commitment to medicine \n- helps to appreciate what the job involves \n- gives insight into practicalities of doing medicine \n- teaches valuable communication and interpersonal skills \n- demonstrates the pros and cons of the job \n􀁸 Work experience needs to involve helping others/work with people. Ideal places include hospitals, GP surgeries, nursing homes, schools (especially those with special needs units.) Hospices may be a possibility. Placements within the NHS even if they are only admin roles are relevant as they help give an understanding of how the NHS runs. Anything which involves talking to patients / helping people is very valuable. \n􀁸 Be as flexible as possible and start as early as possible to look for placements. \n􀁸 To get the most out of it work hard, be punctual and polite, take advantage of every opportunity, take notes and reflect on experience. \n􀁸 Get involved in extracurricular activities – youth clubs, charity shops, mentoring/tutoring, Duke of Edinburgh, St Johns Ambulance, clubs, teams etc. But need to explain how and why these things are relevant to medicine application – relate to entry requirements. \n􀁸 For Dentistry-shadow at least one dentist over a period of time (preferably both NHS & priva","cbCaibLeSAEC2xBE","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibLeSAEC2xBE","pdf",373997,"English","# Personal qualities and readiness\n## Interpersonal skills, resilience, and time management\n# Training duration and progression\n## Foundation Programme and continuous training\n# Academic requirements and selection tests\n## GCSE/A-level grades\n## UKCAT and BMAT\n# UCAS application strategy\n## Applying early and course choices\n## Managing offers and interviews\n# Maximising chances of admission\n## Work experience and volunteering\n## Dentistry shadowing and manual dexterity\n# Useful contacts and volunteer resources","[{\"question\":\"What personal qualities are needed to become a doctor or dentist?\",\"answer\":\"The guidance highlights interpersonal communication, honesty and integrity, stress management, open-mindedness and adaptability, reflection ability, good time management, cultural awareness, teamwork willingness, and responsibility/leadership.\"},{\"question\":\"How long does medical or dentistry training take before specialising?\",\"answer\":\"Medical and dentistry degree courses last at least five years.
