He is nominally impartial, but often acts on the side of good, which offers protection to those in need. \nPurpose and Duty \nHelm is worshipped by soldiers, bodyguards, and paladins. He guides those who dedicate their lives to the protection of a location, person, treasure, or even an ideal. \nHis churches are fortresses, built to have impregnable defenses. Their walls protect the clergy and their sacred relics, representing Helm's reputation as the perfect guardian. During times of emergency, they open their gates and offer protection to those seeking refuge from grave threats. \nTragic Past \nHelm's history is full of dark moments, when bad luck, misunderstanding, or the burdens of duty caused him and his loved ones to suffer greatly. Perhaps precisely because he has lost so much, he redoubles his efforts to protect what is important. \nThe first of these tragedies occurred during the Dawn Cataclysm. This event, spurred by Lathander's reckless zealotry, caused the death of Helm's lover, Murdane. Helm's view of Lathander has been strained by this incident, seeing him as potential liability to the stability of the Realms. \nTime of Troubles \nThe second event occurred during the Time of Troubles. When the Dead Three stole the Tablets of Fate, Lord Ao banished all of the gods to the Prime Material, forcing them to recover the tablets using their avatar forms. \nHelm was the only god who retained his full divinity, and he was tasked with guarding the Celestial Stairway. This stairway connected the Realms with the planes and the divine realms of each deity. \nHis orders were to prevent any deity from returning to the planes until the tablets were found. A few deities tried to bargain with him, but Helm was unmoved and ordered them to leave. \nHowever, Mystra was undeterred, and tried to force her way past him. The two battled, but Mystra was no match for him in her diminished state. As Helm's divine gauntlet smote Mystra, her body exploded with the force of a million spells. \nHelmlands \nAs Mystra's body detonated, the countryside was devastated for several miles in every direction. Magic would forever be unstable in that region, and the land itself became corrupted by the erratic energies that were unleashed. \nGods and mortals were shocked that Helm had killed the Goddess of Magic. Despite perfectly executing his duty given to him by Lord Ao, it was Helm that bore the burden of its consequences. Regions of dead magic caused by Mystra's demise became known as the Legacy of Helm. \nA Duel with Tyr \nYears later, Tyr requested that Helm act as an intermediary with Tymora. Tyr sought a courtship with Lady Luck, but wanted to pursue her with decorum. In the interest of propriety, Helm accepted the request, swearing to defend the lady's honor. \nHowever, Cyric became aware of this arrangement, and started to manipulate events behind the scenes. He spread rumors that Helm was also romantically interested in Tymora, and that he was using this opportunity to get close to her. \nTyr's honor demanded that he challenge Helm to a duel, and Helm's honor demanded he accept. Cyric cackled maniacally as his scheme had orchestrated a duel between two of his greatest enemies. \nThe only victor in this duel was evil itself. In his fury, Tyr had slain his honorable friend. The potential relationship with Tymora was ruined, and Tyr's sanity shattered under the weight of his guilt. \nTheWatcher Returns \nHelm's faithful dispersed during a century of absence, but some always held hope that he would return. Their prayers were answered after the Second Sundering, as Helm manifested once more to offer his protection. \nToday, Helm is seen as a bastion of honor and duty. He opposes Mask, who would steal that which must be guarded. He opposes Talos, who would destroy that which must be prot","cbCaiegs9PPJnVSo","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiegs9PPJnVSo","pdf",688632,"English","# Chapter 34: Helm\n## Purpose and Duty\n## Tragic Past\n## Time of Troubles\n## Helmlands\n## A Duel with Tyr\n## The Watcher Returns\n## Paladin of Helm","[{\"question\":\"What are Helm’s purpose and duties as a god?\",\"answer\":\"Helm protects through vigilance and watchfulness, guiding those who safeguard locations, persons, treasure, or ideals.
