The study introduces disguise by tracing its use from primitive ritual through Jonson’s comedies and masques, then analyzes both theatrical and satirical value of disguise.","DISGUISE IN BEN JONSON1S COMEDIES \nHelen Martiquet \nA THESIS \nin \nThe Department \nof \nEnglish Literature \nPresented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirementsfor the Degree of Master of Arts atSir George Williams UniversityMontreal,Canada \nMarch,1972 \nHelen Martiquet 1972 \nABSTRACT \nDISGUISE IN BEN JONSON 3S COMEDIES \nHelen Martiquet \nDisguise is used extensi.vely in Jonson's comedies, and itis the purpose of this thesis to examine why he may havechosen to employ this particular convention so freely, andhow he uses it within the structure of each of five comedies:Every Man in His Humour,Volpone,Epicoene,The Alchemistand Bartholomew Fair。 A general discussion of disguise in-troduces my subject,as I trace, briefly, the use of dis-guise from the primitive ritual to Jonson's comedies andnasques.A discussion of the theatrical and satirical valueof disguise follows.Disguise seems to fall into two dis-tinct types, aggressive and protective disguise, and I haveexplained how Jonson favoured aggressive disguise in hiscomedies。I then divide aggressive disgulse into five separ-ate categories:the quick-change artist, the male-female dis-guise,the dying man,the spy,and the occupational disguise. The bulk of the paper examines these different kinds of dis-guise as they are used in Jonson¹s five major comedies。 \nCONTENTS \nINTRODUCTION ····· ………………………………………………………………………………………1 \nTHE MASK ····· ··· …………………………………………………………………………………5 \nTHE THEATRICAL ADVANTAGES OF DISGUISE………………………………………………14 \nTHE SATIRICAL ADVANTAGES OF DISGUISE………………………………………………21 \nKINDS OF DISGUISE………………………………………………………………………………………………………27 \nEVERY MAN in HIS HUMOUR…………………………………………………………………41 \nVOLPONE……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………54 \nEPICOENE………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………74 \nTHE ALCHEMIST…………………………………………………………………………………………………………90 \nBARTHOLOME'W FAIR ………………………………………………………………………………………………………106 \nCONCLUSION……………………………………………………………………………………………………………;。120 \nNOTES。,·。· ···· ………………………………………………………………………………………126 \nLIST OF WORKS CITED…………………………………………………………………………………………………130 \nINTRODUCTION \nThe appeal that disguise had for Elizabethan dramatistsis attested to by the hundreds of plays in which it appearsin this spectacular period of English theatre。 It servedboth the greatest and the lowliest of dramatists, played itspart in such widely divergent genres as tragedy and farce, and was equally effective in comedy,as indispensible toShakespeare in the composition of his romantic comedy as itwas for the realistic or new comedy of Ben Jonson。But itwas Jonsonts use of the disguise convention which capturedmy imagination and caused me to give serious considerationto it as a suitable subject for a thesis. \nJonson's plays are full of impostors and one would behard put to find a character who does not wear a disguiseof one kind or another. The most persistent themes in thecomedies are explorations of various forms of deception:Volpone simulates a dying man in order to deceive those whosegreed far exceeds his own;Subtle pretends to know the secretof transmuting base metals into gold and dresses himself inspecial robes for his part;Merecraft poses as a projectorintent on relieving unsuspecting victims of their money。 Thelist is endless and could easily include characters from allof Jonson's comedies.Epicoene pretends to be a.silent womanin order to attract the noise-hating Morose, and Brainwormdisguises himself as an old soldier to hide his true identityfrom his master and ally himself with his master's son. These \n2 \nare the knaves of Jonson1s comedies who blatantly enlistthe aid of disguise as a ·device to outwit their less clevervictims, but the victims, too, sport their own brand of mask, masks of hypocrisy and imposture. \nThere are the birds of prey who pretend concern for thedying Volpone but wish him dead, and Morose who declares hisantipathy to the noise of the human voice but never ceasesto talk himself.
