M. Coetzee, born on 9 February 1940, is a South African novelist, essayist, linguist, translator, and winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature. In 2013, Richard Poplak of the Daily Maverick described him as “inarguably the most celebrated and decorated living English language author.” Before receiving the Nobel Prize, Coetzee had already won several important awards, including the Jerusalem Prize, the CNA Prize three times, the Prix Femina Étranger, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and the Booker Prize twice. \nIn 1983, Coetzee received Britain’s highest award for fiction for his novel Life and Times of Michael K. On 25 October 1999, it was announced that he had won his second Booker Prize, an unprecedented achievement, for Disgrace. It was his eighth novel and appeared after a gap of five years following his seventh novel. During this period, he mainly worked on non-fiction, including two long lectures collected in The Lives of Animals (1999), though much of that work also uses a fictional form. The Lives of Animals explores the relationship between humans and animals and examines how human values are shaped. Disgrace continues these concerns about animals and human values, while also investigating transformed racial relations in post-apartheid South Africa. \nBackground of the Novel \nDisgrace may be regarded as Coetzee’s major literary offering to South Africa’s troubled democracy. It is a complex and multi-layered novel centred on Professor David Lurie, his daughter Lucy, and Petrus. The story takes place against the unstable political background of South Africa after the end of apartheid. \nThe domination of the male body over the female body is one of the major concerns of the novel. It presents the disturbing side of the new democracy and has therefore attracted the attention of critics, scholars, students, and intellectuals. Coetzee personally witnessed many of the harsh realities of life in South Africa. Born in Cape Town, he lived there for nearly five decades before moving to Australia. His direct experience of South African society enabled him to portray these realities in Disgrace with honesty, sensitivity, and deep understanding. \nDavid Lurie’s Personal Disgrace \nDavid Lurie is a professor at the Technical University of Cape Town. He has sexual relationships with professional sex workers. When Soraya, a prostitute with whom he has been involved, disappears from his life, he becomes restless and dissatisfied. This leads him to become attracted to one of his students, Melanie Isaacs. \nMelanie is described as small and thin, with closely cropped hair and large dark eyes. Lurie becomes interested in her at first sight and begins to look at her with sexual desire. He invites her to his house. Their relationship is improper because Lurie is more than thirty years older than Melanie and is also her teacher. The text raises the important question: \n“But the girl he has brought is not just thirty years his junior; she is a student—his student, under his tutelage. No matter what passes between them now, they will have to meet again as teacher and pupil. Is she prepared for that?” \nLurie and Melanie speak about their personal lives. He tells her that he lives alone and enjoys sex with prostitutes. He asks her to stay with him for the night. Their relationship becomes more troubling when Lurie visits Melanie’s residence without permission. Her cousin is absent at the time, and Melanie is surprised by the unwanted arrival of her \nteacher. She spends time with him not for academic reasons but because he seeks physical pleasure. Lurie then takes her back to his house. \n“He takes her back to his house. On the living-room floor, to the sound of rain pattering against the windows, he makes love to her. Her body is clear, simple, in its way perfect; though she is passive throughout, he finds the act pleasurable—so pleasurable that from its climax he tumbles i","cbCaihxfyg04QSLa","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihxfyg04QSLa","pdf",49581,"English","# Background of the Novel\n## David Lurie’s Personal Disgrace\n## Lucy’s Suffering and the Political Context","[{\"question\":\"What historical and political background shapes Disgrace?\",\"answer\":\"The novel is set in South Africa after the end of apartheid, where the political climate remains unstable.
