I'm Bob [Robert] Malloy, the manager of the Library and Publishing unit in the Information and Technology Solutions Vice Presidency of the World Bank [Group] . In this series, we will explore pivotal moments in development history, and hear the perspectives of staff. Join us as we bring history to life, reflecting on our past, and looking at the lessons learned. A disclaimer, though, that these conversations do not reflect the positions or views of the World Bank Group.  \nNow on to the episode.  \nToday we have Mukesh Chawla, an economist and development practitioner, a leading authority in health system strengthening, pandemic preparedness, and aging. He joined the Bank in 2000 as a senior human development economist in ECA [Europe and Central Asia] . From 2004, Mukesh was lead economist in the ECA and Africa Human Development Department before becoming a manager of strategy and global engagements in health, nutrition, and population from 2008 to 2011. Mukesh then moved to become adviser to the Vice President of the Human Development Network [HNP] and Head Knowledge Management from 2011 to 2014. Between 2014 and ‘ 16, he was the acting Director of Knowledge Management for the World Bank Group.  \nIn 2016, he returned to HNP practice as adviser and coordinator of the Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility [PEF], a position he held until his retirement in 2023. These are just an outline [of] Mukesh's time at the Bank. He has authored among other publications From Red to Gray: The “Third Transition” of Aging Populations in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, addressing the economic consequences of aging.
