Iam Elisa Liberatori Prati, the Chief Archivist. In this series, we will explore pivotal moments in development history and hear the perspectives of staff. Join us as we bring history to life, reflecting on our past and looking at the lessons learned. Now on to the episode.  \nToday, we will be chatting with Jeff Thindwa, an International Development practitioner who most recently was the Program Manager for Global Partnership for Social Accountability (GPSA) in the Social Sustainability and Inclusion Global Practice at the World Bank; we call it SSI. Jeff began his 22-year journey at the Bank as Senior Social Development Specialist in 2000 under President Jim Wolfensohn. He supported the Bank’s dialogues with Civil Society Organizations [CSOs], participation of beneficiaries in Bank operations and social accountability practices, and analytical work to improve country conditions for civil society.  \nJeff was on the team that prepared the IDA [International Development Association] funded Cambodia demand for good governance operation, and he led the program for accountability in Nepal. In 2010, Jeff joined the World Bank Institute, becoming Practice Manager for social accountability from 2012 until 2014, when he became Practice Manager for Open and Collaborative Governance in the newly created Governance Global Practice under President Jim Kim, a position that Jeff held till he became GPSA Program Manager in 2016.  \nPrior to joining the World Bank, Jeff had worked in development for 17 years with CSOs. The last role as International Programs Director for World Vision UK, and before that practicing law in the private sector and as a legal aid lawyer in the Malawi government.  \nToday we will talk with Jeff Thindwa, chatting about his experiences and insights from his work in the field. Welcome Jeff thank you for joining us!  \nJEFF: Well, thank you, Elisa! I'm glad to be with you.  \nELISA: I’m delighted you're here. And before we really start, let me ask you if there is anything that I did not highlight in the introduction that on the contrary you would like to mention before we begin.  \nJEFF: I think you have covered pretty much the most important ground. I would not want to add much except to say that for me, a pivotal moment in my career happened just soon after I joined the Bank. I'll talk about it later. But that's how we helped governments develop their poverty reduction strategies, in response to the debt relief program, under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative [HIPC] . So, helping countries to bring together their stakeholders and civil society. I worked in several countries, such as Gambia, Malawi, Tanzania. Important work that was quite phenomenal for the Bank to do.  \nELISA: Excellent. So, you will go back to that, and I move to my first question. You are now retiring from the World Bank Group.
