years, pay anything like worthytribute to Father Lord? There is so much to saythat one cannot say anything;for anything one wouldsay would be all too inadequate. \nPerhaps the lines from Edwin Markham's poemquoted in the Queen's Worker, our house organ here, ofwhich Father Lord was founder and first editor havesaid it best. \nAnd when he fell in whirlwind,he went downAs when a lordly cedar, green with boughs,Goes down with a great shout upon the hillsAnd leaves a lonesome place against the sky. \nOr perhaps Father Lord himself has given us,in thelines the Worker quoted from an unpublished manu-script of his, what might be considered his epitaph.Inthem he describes his first impressions of the novitiateat Florissant,Missouri,to which he had come to jointhe Jesuits. That was back in 1909.Looking back onthose days he wrote: \n“By mid-morning I was alone.... \n\"I stood on little mounds of beautifully kept grassand looked over the Florissant Valley, which is,alongwith the Valley of the Nile, among the most luxuriantvalleys in the world.I moved quietly through thegraveyard and saw there the names of great Jesuits whohad lived and died for Christ,Jesuits whose bodies nowrested peacefully under the tall white cross, gravesshadowed by a double line of beautiful sentinel arborvitae. \n\"I looked back at the great stone building, which hadbeen erected by the elderly brothers, who had brought \nthe stone here on stoneboats from the banks of the Missouri.I saw the other buildings—plain, sturdy, friendly, warm, homelike. And against all this I saw,as against the backdrop of a mostsuccessful play, the busy life of the novitiate.... \n“Ancient trees that had looked down on thousands of youngJesuits in the making...orchards filled with early fruit...thebarns in the near distance and a herd of wondrous Holsteinsmoving out to pasture...and over all the bell ringing the passingof the hours and the change of religious assignments....and thecross lifting its finger endlessly to the blue summer sky and theheaven that that sky barely hid. \n“I had forgotten my date with the train to Chicago. \n\"I had forgotten that I hated all farms and this farm in particular.\"I had forgotten that I was lonesome. \n“Suddenly I knew that I had arrived.I knew that I was whereI wanted to be.... \n\"I knew that I belonged and that,if God would let me stay,Iwould stay and thank Him all my life and try to be not toounworthy. \n“I stayed, and God was good, and I am humbly grateful.” \nIt was there in that smiling valley, there in the shadow of thenoviceship buildings, there in the graveyard where_other“greatJesuits”had been interred that we bade farewell to Father Lord'smortal remains. As far as his body was concerned,it had madethe complete turn of the cycle. It had come back at last to restwhere its life as a Jesuit had begun. \nBut his soul? Ah,that was another thing entirely.Thatdazzling soul of his, always so vibrantly alive had shot off at atangent from that cycle and from this globe. It had sped arrow-straight to the thrones of the King and Queen Fath","cbCaiuOBgjTJqyBH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiuOBgjTJqyBH","pdf",1396810,36,"English","# Epitaph\n# The Whole Will of God\n# Instructions on the Social Order Mary Our Hope\n# Next Comes the End\n# Your Sodalists Want\n# Confirmed In Our Ways\n# World Sodality Day\n# Hope for Apostles\n# Community of Nations\n# The Liturgy and the Mystical Body of Christ","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the epitaph section in this issue?\",\"answer\":\"It honors Father Lord’s life and service, using quotations and reflective memories to express gratitude and remembrance.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document describe the role of liturgy?\",\"answer\":\"It presents liturgy as central to Christian living, likening it to the bloodstream and nervous system of Christ’s Mystical Body.\"},{\"question\":\"What warning does the text give about focusing only on externals of liturgy?\",\"answer\":\"It cautions that stopping at rubrics, vestments, and surface details misses liturgy’s inward meaning and true value.\"}]","DIRECTION - April - Vol. 1 - No. y | PDF",1789960675,91]
