onlymedium of intercourse with the bordering Hill Tribes. There isnothing to show that the Assamese race and their.language havenot existed in this Valley from time immemorial;and it is surpri-sing that, during the change of rulers, the oppression and misruleto which they have been subjected, there are so few traces of anymaterial change in their language. The Ahoms,a branch of thegreat Shan or Tai race, conquered Assam at an early period, andgoverned it for many hundred years, until it passed into the handsof the present Goverament;but scarcely a trace of their languageis found in the present dialect of the Assamese. The Burmese, the Mohammedans, and powerful Cachari Tribes have in turn wagedwar upon Assam without affecting the language. This may serve toshow the love of a people for their own tongue, and that if we wouldconfer upon them the blessings of science and the true Religion, the most direct and successful medium is their own vernacular. \nUnfortunately an impression has prevailed that Assamese andBengali are identical or nerly so.Hence all the Schools,Courts, and official business of every kind are conducted in Bengali.Thishas greatly retarded the cause of education and general progressamong the masses. They have no inclination to abandon their ownfor a foreign dialect. The higher classes, seeing their own languageignored, strive to obtain a suficient knowledge of Bengali to fillGovernment offices;but they never feel at horme jin the language. In the family and social circle, nothing but the vernacular is spoken. Were Gavernment now to abandon the couatry,Assamese wouldsupersede all other dialects simply because it is the language ofthe masses. \nThat eminent linguist Max Muller tells us,that“there is hardlya language that in some sense may not be called a mixed language. No nation or Tribe was ever so completely isolated as not to ad-mit a certain number of foreign words.”Again,“It matters nothow many words may be derived in common from another language, \niv \nit does not prove the identity of anytwo dialects. It is to thegrammar that we must look,to decide their identity.” \nNow in regard to the supposed identity of Assamese and Bengali, let it be borne in mind that wherever Hinduism goes,it takes itssacred language, the Sanscrit, along with it.In all the dialects ofIndia, spoken by Hindoos, religious and scientific terms are mostlyof Sanscrit origin, modified more or less by the peculiaritiesofeach dialect. But the grammars of these dialects are different;hence they are distinct languages, notwithstanding they have manywords in comnion. So in the case before us.Both Assamese andBengali borrow.largely from the Sanscrit, but the grammars arequite different,as will be readily seen by comparing them together.lt might as well be said that French and Italian are one language, because both are sprung from the Latin,as that!Bengali and As.sanese are one, because they borrow in common from the Sanscrit. \nAfier thirty years familiar acqiaintance with the people,I amfully persuaded that it is a mistake to ignore their language.Itought rather to be culivated. If suitable encouragement were given, the educated Assamese would soou supply vernacular School Books, and a new impulse in favor of education would manifest itself amongthe masses. In no other way can education ever be popularizedamong them. \nIn regard to the present work,it is the first Dictionary of thelanguage ever published, and has necessari","cbCaivEwpQNlNqX8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivEwpQNlNqX8","pdf",43618020,628,"English","# Preface\n## Role of
