OF UTOPIA \nthe semiotic movement. But,for the rest,a diagram is not asketch(therefore it evokes nothing, points to nothing),and a diagram is not a plan(therefore it cannot be built). It is a kind ofneither/nor'of delineation,a neutral zone, where certain rela-tions are mapped precisely but without affect, with no qualita-tive information;there is,one might say, nothing superfluous inthe diagram. \nWhat then,if anything, does a diagram do in or for architec-ture?If there is no empathy in the diagram, might there be atleast a performative definition?Charles Sanders Peirce, the doy-en of semiotics, defined it as representing a kind of reasoning, and placed it among the kinds of signs he called icons:“A Dia-gram is mainly an Icon, and an icon of intelligible relations inthe constitution of its Object.\"2 A diagram would incorporate thepractices of graphic abstractions(geometry, syllogistics)and pos-sess what for Peirce was the crucial indexical function of'point-ing'Unlike the drawing however,it does not provide depth ofmeaning beyond its surface—what Gilles Deleuze calls insight'into its object.Rather,as in itself displaying the formal featuresofits object,it substitutes for and takes the place of its object.Forthis reason Peirce sees the diagram as eliding \"the distinctionbetween the real and the copy”a distinction which,Peirceclaims, disappears entirely in the diagram. \nAt first sight, the diagram has little place in architectural prac-tice—indeed,words like 'diagrammatic'have taken on negativeconnotations with respect to late examples of modernism andpostmodernism.Reductive, schematic, resolutely without aura, the diagram seems alien to the creation of form, space, and place. After allit is the drawing and its evocative first step, the sketch, that has been the fetish of architects since the Renaissance.Di-segno,'since Brunelleschi,Alberti, and Vasari, has been thewatchword of architectural talent,at least until relatively recent-ly.The definition of the diagram offered by the Oxford EnglishDictionary uses terms like'geometrical figure,'written list,'re-gister;'scale,'that refer to the informational content and com-municative power of the 'diagram,in a way that seems opposedto the architectural drawing as traditionally conceived in everyway. \nBut here,in this elision, there emerges a potential role for thediagram that goes far beyond its informative or referential char-acteristics.For the questions raised by Peirce—is it a real objector is it a copy of a real object?—transforms it into an instrumentof suspended reality. As Peirce concludes:\"It is,for the moment,\"he concludes,“a pure dream.”3 Or,in other terms, the diagram \nMany architects, indeed, would not want to consider the dia-gram at all, save, perhaps for that moment when a client wantsto be reassured that all functions are being taken care of andrelated in proper ways.Hence the bubble diagram'developedinthe I950s as a corrective to modernist universalism, and expand-ed in its role by Christopher Alexander in his early attempts todevelop a design method authorized and driven by cyberneticlogic.Hence too the popularity of diagrams in the early phases of
