crystallized medium and the need fora new media criticism \nOver the past decades the diagram has developed intoa constitutive, generative medium for architectural design,in the process becoming a commonplace term.Architec-tures are often implicit collections of diagrams, elementsof the visualization tools of the design process.Diagramsthereby participate in the creation of architectural forms andtheir spatial organization. \nDifferent meanings of the diagram could be established inthe architectural design:the definition of the diagram variesfrom the significance of a preliminary sketch to a schematicrepresentation of the design concept and the process ofgenerating architectural forms. The function of diagram-matic processes in the transformation and generation ofnew pictorial forms in the overall architectural design pro-cess has become central -for example,in the transitionfrom the analysis of a specific location to the first concep-tual design sketch. The diagram has become an essentialtranslator between information and forms, data and designproducts. Thanks to the development of digital techniquesand programs, numerical translation has spread and be-come institutionalized.Diagrams have thereby becomean important medium for urban development designs, bycompressing, translating and portraying complex relationsof scale. The diagram is a visual medium which facilitatesa medial translation of perceived configurations in the think-ing process and vice versa. \nThe diagram can be described as an imaginative processwhich by virtue of analogue and digital constructionprocedures helps in the transformation of typologies, \nconfigurations and models. This is a creative, volatile, notlogically describable, highly instable and varied process. The diagram moves with lines, points, and dashes in thearchitecture between geometry, art, and theory.Along theway towards the goal of discovering a new shaping pro-cedure,in addition to the analytic and descriptive applica-tions of diagrams,a diagrammatic thinking in architecturehas emerged-one which has hardly been investigated froma philosophical viewpoint.1 \nIn order to understand and think through the generativefunction of the diagram in architecture today,it would behelpful to reflect on its origins as well as how it becameembedded in current research about the diagrammatic inphilosophy. On the one hand an interdisciplinary investiga-tion can bridge the gap between the current philosophi-cal investigation of the diagram and its application in archi-tecture.On the other hand this investigation could triggera discussion about the possibilities for the application, potentials, and boundaries of the diagram in architecture. That in turn will make possible a comparison of the media-philosophical dimension of the diagram with its use in archi-tecture,while examining its shaping function in design. \nIn the case of the media-philosophical criticism of the dia-gram it may help to address its function as a dispositive forthe generation of images, while at the same time drawingattention to other political sociological and ecological di-mensions which although they are contained in the diagramare mostly hidden because they don't serve an illustrativepurpose. In that sense the diagram represents a medial mo-ment which at the same time limits the design process:itis a medium that both opens up and rules out possibilities. The potential of this kind of reflection is the ability to constantly \ninject new life into the media. The function of media is a usewhich must be reflected in order to continue to develop gen-eratively and experimentally.Theory and practice are closelyinterwoven. In addition to preserving and reflecting on it,architecture history and theory can in fact contribute to therenewal of architecture, especially when they work toge","cbCaiklb02eylSoP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiklb02eylSoP","pdf",3956257,21,"English","# Diagrammatic Practices in
