There are two (medial and lateral) wedge-shaped fibrocartilage discs that help to transmit compressive, shear, and rotational loads through the knee. Meniscus injuries are common in sports and activities of daily living that require squatting and pivoting. Acute meniscus injury is more common in sports that involves pivoting and cutting. These acute tears can occur in conjunction with other injuries, such as tears of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, whereas older individuals may have a degenerative tear. An older, more seasoned meniscus may be more prone to tears even during what appear to be simple activities, such as getting off the floor or squatting to garden. Accurate diagnosis of meniscus injuries is essential for appropriate treatment planning and optimizing patient outcomes. \nDiagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) offers a portable, real-time, and \ncost-effective alternative, gaining traction in rehabilitation and sports medicine settings. MSKUS has emerged as a valuable, non-invasive imaging modality for evaluating meniscus injuries, including meniscus tears and their structural properties, composition and continuity. This manuscript will review the utility of MSKUS in evaluating medial and lateral meniscus injuries, including anatomy, common injury patterns, sonographic techniques, and clinical implications for rehabilitation professionals. Diagnosis of acute meniscus injury by physical examination is often challenging and is frequently misdiagnosed. By integrating MSKUS into clinical practice, providers can improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance diagnostic confidence, monitor healing progression, and guide rehabilitation strategies to achieve optimal patient outcomes for those with knee meniscus injuries. \nLevel of evidence \nV \nINTRODUCTION \nMeniscus injuries can be highly problematic to the health and function of the knee. A tear in one of the menisci will increase joint mechanical stress by limiting the knee’s normal shock-absorbing capacity, which may contribute to joint degeneration over time.1,2 \nANATOMY OF THE MENISCUS \nThe menisci are two crescent-shaped structures situated between the femur and the tibia. The slightly concave surface of the proximal tibia turns into a deeper concavity to accept the large convex distal femoral condyles. This is especially important on the lateral side of the knee joint, asthe lateral tibial plateau is flatter and at times slightly convex. These intervening structures help dampen high com- \npressive forces across the knee. Secondarily, menisci are involved with joint lubrication and nutrient distribution.3‑6 \nTHE ROLE OF MSK ULTRASOUND IN MENISCUS EVALUATION \nADVANTAGES \n• Non-Invasive: Point-of-care ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that can be used on a variety of soft tissue knee pathologies, including themeniscus.7‑11 \n• Real-Time Imaging: MSKUS allows evaluation of themedial or lateral meniscus during both weightbearing and non-weightbearing. Ultrasound can be used atthe same time the knee is loaded12‑15 while it is moved through the available range of motion.16 Dis- \nplacement of meniscal tissue can be seen dynamically.17, 18 \n• High-Resolution Visualization: MSKUS provides detailed images of the outer rim of the medial and lateral meniscus along the respective tibiofemoral joint lines. \n• Accuracy: Sensitivity and ","cbCaipiCEtIAmG2Y","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipiCEtIAmG2Y","pdf",862580,"English","# Introduction\n# Anatomy of the Meniscus\n# The Role of MSK Ultrasound in Meniscus Evaluation\n## Advantages\n## Limitations\n# Sonographic Technique for Evaluating the Menisci","[{\"question\":\"What limitations and technical factors can affect MSKUS interpretation?\",\"answer\":\"Results depend on operator skill and access to suitable equipment.
