Lawrence - Love Poems - Introduction","","A preface introduces a curated collection of love poems by D. H. Lawrence, explaining the editor’s principles for selecting younger and less-established poets and the aim of offering a fresh yardstick for contemporary modern writing. The introduction describes how earlier anthologies often favored poets past mid-career or quickly famous, while this volume attempts to include overlooked voices, using recent publication venues and limiting each poet to a single poem. It also characterizes the tone and themes expected from these writers, shaped by disruption and a less lyrical, more witty engagement with everyday LIMITEDLONDON AND BECCLES \nE.HULTON AND COMPANY LIMITED \n# INTRODUCTION\n\nTHE principles upon which this little collection has beenassembled are easier to carry out than to define. The processof thought was clear, however, and it amounted to this: \nThere are in the world a number of anthologies coveringmodern verse.Almost without exception these include onlythe work of those poets who are already at the turn of forty,or who have made a quick impact on the public by thefrequency of their appearance in magazines and small volumesat the start of their career. \nBeyond these, however, are a number of other poets eithertoo young to have acquired a public reputation or else toodiscreet to hurry into print. Some of them are already wellknown to anybody who follows the course of modernpoetry;some of them have suffered the irrational neglectwhich may fall upon writers who pay scant attention tofashion;some of them are quite unknown. But they all sharethe fact that anthologies have passed them by—so far;andmy difficulty was less that of finding enough good poems tofill a book than to decide by what criterion this poet was tobe included and that left out. \nThe solution may not be very scholarly, but at least it setsa focus for the whole group.I have made the basis of mychoice a number of poems which have appeared during recentyears in The Times Literary Supplement, and I have confinedthem to the work of our younger contributors.I should havethought it pedantic, however,to look only to one periodicalfor the poems chosen, and so I have not hesitated to choosebetter work(as it seemed to me)by the same poet which hadbeen printed elsewhere. And since I do not assume that allthe best poets of the day care to publish their poems in \nPrinting House Square,I have rounded off my choice witha selection of work by poets whom we might wish to haveprinted—making only the proviso that either they had tobe younger than middle-aged or at least to have entered thefield in the immediate past.My hope, therefore,is that I havemade a reasonable selection of poetry which is either un-familiar or else of a kind to act as yardstick to the best ofwhat is being written to-day by the younger generation. \nBecause so small a book can only act as hors ďeuvre toquicken the palate,a single poem has been allotted to eachpoet;and for the same reason I have had to leave out ofaccount a certain revival of the long poem which has comeinto print again after years of neglect. \nIt would be an injustice to these poets to piece themtogether into a single pattern.Indeed, they would be recal-citrant to any pattern.Negatively, most of them have turnedaway from the immediate past. There are few echoes here ofEliot or Edith Sitwell,Auden or Dylan Thomas.I cannotsee any of these adopting a“poetic”life in reaction to thecivilization round them,as even a generation ago they mighthave done.On the contrary, they enter the life of their timesfully, and extract from it what poetry they can.So there aredons among them, and housewives, philosophers, and evena policeman. \nThey are more likely to be witty than lyrical. That isbecause the sharp edges of life cut our hearts more cruellywhen the wrappings of a society at peace with itself arepulled away.Poets,it is true, are seldom at peace with them-selves;but they have now had more than forty years ofdisruption to contend with, and they are running short offresh responses. They have been,at different ti","cbCainB6G2lChA4k","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainB6G2lChA4k","pdf",1695945,56,"English","# INTRODUCTION\n## Selection
