It focuses on improving building-damage detection workflows to support faster, more reliable decision-making during rescue operations. The study positions its contribution within existing remote-sensing mapping challenges, reviews explainable AI approaches, and builds research aims around defined objectives, questions, and identified gaps to advance automated damage assessment.","Developing a Spatial Framework for Earthquake-Induced Building Damage Assessment Using Remote Sensing Data and Advanced Machine Learning methods \nby Sahar Soleimanimatin \nThesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of \nDoctor of Philosophy \nunder the supervision of Distinguished Professor Biswajeet Pradhan and Dr. Mohsen Naderpour \nFaculty of Engineering and Information Technology June 2023 \nCERTIFICATE OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP \nI, Sahar Soleimanimatin declare that this thesis, is submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy, in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Technology Sydney. \nThis thesis is wholly my own work unless otherwise referenced or acknowledged. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. \nThis document has not been submitted for qualifications at any other academic institution. \nThis research is supported by the Australian Government Research Training Program. \nSignature: \nProduction Note: \nSignature removed prior to publication. \nSahar Soleimanimatin \nDate: 6/06/2023 \nDEDICATION \nI would like to dedicate this thesis to Reyhan Jafarizade who was trapped under debris for six hours after the 2003 Bam/Iran earthquake. Young Reyhan was rescued but she lost all her family in that incident. She claims her sister was alive as she could hear her just before the rescuers arrived. Now she is a psychologist helping people like herself who went through trauma in their life. Her story was my motivation for working on this research topic. May this research contribute to the automation of the building damage detection process to speed up the rescue time. \nACKNOWLEDGMENT \nThere are many people without whom this thesis might not have been completed, and to whom I am greatly indebted. I express my deep and sincere sense of indebtedness to my supervisor Distinguished Professor Biswajeet Pradhan, at the School of civil and environmental engineering, Faculty of Engineering and IT for his invaluable guidance, painstaking effort, constant encouragement, and inspiration during every step of my project work throughout the Ph.D. period. Despite his extremely busy schedule, I have always found him accessible for suggestions and discussions. \nI would like to thank Dr. Mohsen Naderpour for providing me the academic facilities and constant motivation. I am also grateful to all candidature assessment panel members for their discussions and suggestions. \nI wish to convey my heartiest thanks to my lab mate Abhirup Dikshit and all my friends from university for their encouragement, and moral and technical support during my thesis work. \nI am very much thankful to the UTS Women in Engineering and IT (WiEIT) community and the team for always being there for me through my Ph.D. journey. \nI would like to thank Dr. Amir Asghari for always believing in me and inspiring me to be my best. I truly appreciate his continued support, words of wisdom, and encouragement. \nFurther, I would like to express my gratitude to the office staff of the department for their help in administrative matters. \nLast but not least, I am grateful to my family and my friends (especially Eman Dasi) for their consistent emotional support and inspiration. \nLIST OF PAPERS/PUBLICATIONS \n1.
