im-pression that it is an important part of theFederal Trade Commission's job to protectconsumers against fraudulent and misleadingadvertising have been somewhat disillusionedby recent F.T.C.decisions.The chairmanat that time,Edward F.Howrey,in aspeech December 14,1954,pointed with prideto a reorganization of the F.T.C.to enable itto do a more effective job\"in assuring properadvertising.\"Mr.Howrey also commentedthat since industry and business were enteringan era of vigorous competition,it was impor-tant for the Federal Trade Commission tooperate effectively in administering the lawsgoverning competition and deceptive prac-tices \"with due regard for all segments of oureconomy including the consumer....\" \nNearly a year later, the Federal TradeCommission issued a\"round-up story\"high-lighting some sixty actions taken by the Com-mission \"of particular interest to consumers,\"ranging from its cracking down on a tonicclaimed to help.heart trouble to a \"goldenopportunity\"coupon book enabling a buyerto get $45 worth of merchandise for a piffling[the Commission's word]$2.50.The releasewas issued because,to quote the Commissio:1,\"many people are unaware of what the Commission can do and does to protect them asconsumers.\" \nNow let us consider the tangible perform-ance of the F.T.C.as the consumers'defender. On May 16,1956,the Commission dismissedits charge of false advertising against themakers of the battery additive,AD-X2.Many CR subscribers have followed the re-ports of this case from its first mention in CRBULLETIN,April 1953,with close interest(Continued on page 29) \n# The Consumers'Observation Post\n\nTHAT BIG ADVERTISING EMPHASIS ON SAFETY FEATURES of automobiles hasbeen a flop so far as the public is concerned.According to Fleet News, dealers report little or no interest on the part of their customers in thisangle. The situation was well summed up by one dealer who commented thatsuch items were just gimmicks and not really safety features. It was hisview that cars today are not as safe as pre-war models, principally becauseof weakness in the framing. \n***
