the style and character of each writer,it is a shared set ofproblems. These problems center on two issues that affect literarycriticism today. One is the situation of criticism itself, what kindof maturer function it may claim—a function beyond the ob-viously academic or pedagogical. While teaching, criticizing, andpresenting the great texts of our culture are essential tasks,to in-sist on the importance of literature should not entail assigning toliterary criticism only a service function.Criticism is part of theworld of letters, and has its own mixed philosophical and literary, reflective and figural strength. The second shared problem is pre-cisely that of the importance—or force—of literature. What doesthat force consist in,how does it show itself? Can a theory be de-veloped that is descriptive and explanatory enough to illuminaterather than pester works of art? \nThere are many ways of describing the force of literature.Thepriority of language to meaning is only one of these, but it playsa crucial role in these essays. It expresses what we all feel aboutfigurative language, its excess over any assigned meaning,or,putmore generally, the strength of the signifer vis-à-vis a signified(the \"meaning\")that tries to enclose it.Deconstruction,as it hascome to be called, refuses to identify the force of literature withany concept of embodied meaning and shows how deeply suchlogocentric or incarnationist perspectives have infuenced the waywe think about art.We assume that,by the miracle of art,the \n\"presence of the word\"is equivalent to the presence of meaning. But the opposite can also be urged, that the word carries with it acertain absence or indeterminacy of meaning.Literary languageforegrounds language itself as something not reducible to mean-ing:it opens as well as closes the disparity between symbol andidea, between written sign and assigned meaning. \nDeconstructive criticism does not present itself as a novel en-terprise.There is,perhaps, more of a relentless focus on certainquestions, and a new rigor when it comes to the discipline ofclose reading.Yet to suggest that meaning and language do notcoincide, and to draw from that noncoincidence a peculiarstrength,is merely to restate what literature has always revealed. There is the difference, for instance, between sound and sense, which both stimulates and defeats the writer.Or the differencewhich remains when we try to reduce metaphorical expressions tothe proper terms they have di","cbCaifCz14FOjHxr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifCz14FOjHxr","pdf",7618275,266,"English","#
