hope,be widely read and welcomed,not only by Readers,but also perhapsby some of the younger clergy.It is admirably done,being essentiallypractical,but based on sound principles and on loyalty to the Prayer Book.I welcome also the insistence on the Reader's loyalty to the incumbentof the parish in which he officiates,and the need of consideration forlocal custom and use.  \nCanon Spence was good enough to consult both myself and the Manage-ment Committee of the Central Readers'Board in considerable detailabout the subject matter of this book before it was sent to the printer,and we have no hesitation in commending it warmly to Readers every-where,with our sincere thanks to its author and to The Royal School ofChurch Music,which has undertaken its publication.  \nT.HEREFORD  \nDECENTLY AND IN ORDER  \n# THE LAY MINISTRY\n\nTHE MINISTRY of Readers in parish churches is widely recognizedtoday as essential to the adequate organization of Sunday worship.Owing to the serious shortage of clergy it would often be virtually im-possible,without the aid of Readers,for Morning and Evening Prayerwith a sermon to be provided in villages where the incumbent wasresponsible for the services in more than one church.Moreover,sincethe appropriate regulations were passed by authority,use is increasinglymade of Readers,with the permission of the diocesan Bishop,inadministering the Cup at services of Holy Communion on great festivals,or in churches where large numbers of communicants are frequentlypresent.Readers are also permitted to read or chant the Epistle,and tooffer the Intercessions in Series 3.  \nPRACTICAL INSTRUCTION.The training of men for the lay ministryin the Church includes a course of study of theology,the Bible,the Bookof Common Prayer and Church history,and guidance in the preparationof sermons.Readers do not appear to be given any instruction in theuse of the voice and the conduct of public worship.This booklet is theoutcome of
