2011 \nDemarre McGill: Seattle’s Newest Flute Star \nby Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull (Flutronix) \nNot many flutists can \nGrant and been the orchestras, an artist \nsay that they’ve received an Avery Fisher Career principal flutist of three different professional with Chamber Music Society Two, and a guest \non a popular PBS children’s show. Demarre McGill, the accomplished principal flutist of the Seattle Symphony and this month’s featured artist atthe Flute Club, can say that he’s done all of the above and more. \nDemarre has served as inspiration to us over the years, even though we’ve never met. As students, we were consistently inspired and encouraged by his accomplishments as a flutist, artist, and African-American classical musician. So we were thrilled when, over an exchange of coast-to-coast emails, we had the opportunity to learn more about his upbringing, musical endeavors, background, and some highlights of his multifaceted career. \nBorn in Chicago, IL, Demarre grew up in an artistic and creative family. \nHis mother (a dance therapist and art teacher who now works in the theater) and father (recently retired from the Chicago Fire Department, but also a former art teacher) both painted avocationally. In addition to their own strong passion for the arts, Demarre’s parents were also very encouraging and supportive of their children’s artistic pursuits. Knowing this, we asked Demarre how his parents helped to encourage him and how their \nencouragement helped to shape him as a person.“They taught us early on the power of having a positive mental attitude and never saying,‘I can’t,’”Demarre says. “I believe these things continue to have a powerful impact on me today.” Demarre’s brother Anthony (four years his junior, and now principal clarinet at the Metropolitan Opera) also greatly benefited from this environment \n(Cont’d on page 4) \nDemarre McGill: Seattle’s Newest Flute Star by Flutronix flutists Nathalie Joachim and \n Allison Loggins-Hull.....................................1 \nFrom the President: Forging Ahead by John McMurtery..................................2 \nMember Profile: Barbara Hopkins.......................3 \nFrom the Archives: December 1961.....................6 \nPhotos from November 20 workshop/concert....6 \n A n o u n c e m e n t s \nFlute Happenings...................................................3 \nHoliday Refreshments Needed..............................3 \nEnsembles Program Update...................................7 \nIn Concert \nDemarre McGill, flute \nTBA, piano \nwith guest artist Anthony McGill, clarinet \nSunday, December 18, 2011, 5:30 pm Engelman Recital Hall, Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue (entrance on East 25th Street between Lexington and Third Avenues) \nFour Prayers for flute and piano \nPetite Suite \nfor flute, clarinet, and piano Sonata for flute and piano Duo for flute and piano \nSonatine en Trio for flute, clarinet, and piano Choros No. 2 for flute and clarinet \nSonata for flute and piano \nNed Rorem (b. 1923) Claude Debussy (1862–1918) arr.
