The narrative highlights how Kerr’s public “lady” image shaped her casting in roles like governesses, nuns, and women of sacrifice, while also emphasizing standout departures from type, including From Here to Eternity. It covers major turning points, relationships, notable film and television work, and concludes with later-stage developments and a reflective filmography and index.","Deborah Kerr \nALSO BY MICHELANGELO CAPUA AND FROM MCFARLAND \nWilliam Holden: A Biography (2010) Yul Bynner: A Biography (2006) \nVivien Leigh: A Biography (2003) Montgomery Clift: A Biography (2002) \nDeborah Kerr A Biography \nMICHELANGELO CAPUA \nMcFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers Jefferson, North Carolina, and London \nLIBRARY OF CONGRESS CATALOGUING-IN-PUBLICATION DATA Capua, Michelangelo, 1966– \nDeborah Kerr : a biography / Michelangelo Capua. \n[p. cm](p. cm). \nIncludes bibliographical references and index. \nISBN 978-0-7864-5882-0 \nsoftcover : 50\\# alkaline paper \n¡ . The Scottish actress once said,“That ‘lady’ image gets my goat! All you have to have is decent manners to be considered a Lady. You can be a terrible person—do really awful things to people—and still be thought as a lady. On the other hand I know lots of women who aren’t very ‘proper’ but are truly ladies in their kindness and generosity.” \nKerr was a dedicated actress blessed with a natural beauty that faded little over the years. She projected a cool reserve and an aura of serene perfection which often hid passion and insecurity beneath the surface. These qualities often led her to be cast as nuns, widows, nurses, governesses and women who had suffered or chosen to sacrifice themselves to others. Of her several screen governesses, the best known and most popular was Mrs. Anna Leonowens in the musical The KingandI. However, one of the most successful roles she ever portrayed was outside her usual typecast: the sexually frustrated army wife in Fred Zinnemann’s From Here to Eternity, which contains one of the most iconic scenes in screen history—the surfside embrace and kiss with Burt Lancaster. Kerr also holds the sad record for the most Academy Award nominations without winning, before she was presented with an honorary Oscar in 1994 for being “an artist of impeccable beauty, discipline and elegance.” \nAmong all the actors I researched, I have never encountered an artist or a person like Deborah. Unbelievably, not a colleague, friend, relative, or journalist ever mentioned or said anything unpleasant about her character. This does not mean that Kerr was a saint, but it confirms what a genuine, compassionate, gracious human being she was on and off the","cbCaiq7mZlATjmWv","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiq7mZlATjmWv","pdf",12161908,6,1,225,"English","en",105,"# Preface\n## A Lonely Childhood\n## Stage and Screen Debuts\n## A Time of Love and War\n## The Dream Factory\n## Hollywood’s Most Elegant Redhead\n## A Turning Point to Eternity\n## The King and I\n## Bob, Cary & Niv\n## Peter Viertel: A Love Affair to Remember\n## The Sundowners\n## Iguana\n## Memorable Years, Not So Memorable Roles\n## Stage Comeback\n## A Gentle Fadeout\n## Filmography\n## Television Appearances\n## Stage Appearances\n## Radio Programs\n## Chapter Notes\n## Bibliography\n## Index","[{\"question\":\"How does the biography describe Deborah Kerr’s public image and its impact on her roles?\",\"answer\":\"Kerr was widely branded as “The English Rose” and “The Ladylike,” shaping casting into refined characters such as nuns, widows, nurses, and governesses.
