Carver’s fiction collection presents a sequence of impossible, puzzle-driven crimes centered on meticulous observation, sharp dialogue, and escalating mystery. Each story follows an investigation shaped by clues that refuse to behave logically, where staging, timing, and human behavior collide in unsettling ways. Through recurring characters and escalating circumstances, the book explores how small details—objects, gestures, and overlooked evidence—become the key to understanding what actually happened and why it could not be solved by ordinary assumptions.","DEATH IN 1 3 ROOMSAn Impossible Crime Collection \nA. A sweet girl, full of questions. “GreatAunt, why are you going that way?” she hissed. “It could be dangerous!” \nCornelia smiled complacently at her. So nervy, that child.“Come now, Alex,” she said. “Are we persons who run away from gunshots, or run towards them? Besides,” she continued, regaining her unimpressive topspeed,“at my age, I expect death every day.” \nAlex scowled. That was all very well when you’d been alive in G.K. Chesterton’s time, but hardly fair when you hadn’t been alive at the millennium. But she knew from cruel experience that trying to stop Cornelia Crow from walking towards a crime scene was like trying to deter a miner from a vein of gold. Besides, Alex was curious too. But she could be curious whilst flitting awkwardly from tree to shadow of tree. \nDeviating only to pass through a gate marked Private,” Cornelia made straight as the corvid flies for the source of the disturbance and was delighted to discover the looming façade of a manor house. It was in good shape for its age, gabled roof stretching over whitewashed walls with exposed beams; but despite the heat there was only a single window open high above, and it yawned like a mouth. The grounds, however, seemed not to have been touched since the Tudors, and now the shape of a formal garden was traced in patterns of overgrown lawn and weeds, moss coated the stone steps to a tall weed-crawled terrace, and a corpse lay in the middle of it all. He would have been handsome were his blank expression not pressed into the grass; clean-shaven, the back of his head was marred by a wet hole that had thankfully not penetrated through. \nThe casually-dressed corpse was not the most bizarre element of the tableau. Lying a few feet away, peeping from the terrace shadow like a snake, was a prosthetic leg.
