California. The ocean. Simon Peake had never seen it, not properly, not the Pacific. Somewhere in his head he pictured it endless and warm, sapphire-blue water rolling forever, wind that smelled of salt and evenings where the sunsets turned the sky crimson. He didn’t know where he’d stay when he got there, didn’t know how long he’d stay. It didn’t even matter how long it took to reach California. He wasn’t in a hurry. He wasn’t in a hurry for anything anymore. \nHe took the back roads because they were quieter, more interesting. Highways made him restless—too many other vehicles, eyes, too much speed and purposeless purpose. The back roads moved slower, curling through the wilds, through forgotten towns and old farms, the kind of places that rarely asked questions because few had the energy to care. \nHe’d been driving for several hours already today. He’d stop for coffee when the gas gauge went below half, refill the thermos, keep moving. \nHe had enough money for now. Not enough to get all the way west, but enough for a while. Eventually, he’d have to find a job. A few days’ labor here, a week there. Something quiet, easy. Just enough cash in hand and for just long enough to keep himself on the road. Staying too long anywhere was what caused trouble. \nTrouble had a way of remembering him, it seemed. \nTrouble never stopped moving either, which was why he did. \nThe truck hummed under him, the kind of low mechanical sound that brought comfort—honest noise, predictable. A twenty-plus-year-old Chevy, rust at the fenders, paint dulled to a weary blue-gray. He’d bought it for a hundred dollars from a scrapyard in Appalachia—the last place he’d stayed more than a few days. But he’d never intended on staying longer, even if there’d been plenty of draws to the place. He’d spent a few times more than the original cost and a fair few hours making the truck roadworthy. And it was now, even if there remained an incessant click-click from under the hood, the seat springs creaked, the air forever smelled of fuel and dust, the dashboard clock didn’t work, and the radio had one good station that faded with every county line. He didn’t know if the old Chevy would make it all the way to California with him. He hoped so. Right now, it was his truest companion. \nAs he drove on, the sky up front in the west was a washed-out white, the horizon all haze and pine. He drove with the window cracked, the warm air thick with the smell of resin and asphalt. A train track ran parallel to the road for a while, a freight line heading somewhere faster than he was. \nThe first sign of trouble came as a cough from the engine. Just one. He turned the radio off to listen. Another cough, longer this time, followed by a grinding rattle that sank into silence. The oil light flared red on the dash. He eased the truck onto the shoulder and cut the ignition. \nSteam hissed from under the hood with an almost taunting inevitability. He sat there a moment, fingers drumming lightly on the wheel, the heat pressing in. Then he got out. The sound of cicadas prepping for the humid night ahead filled the space where the engine had been. The road behind him was empty, and the road ahead rolled on and disappeared into a curtain of pine trees. \nHe popped the hood.
