Butuntil recent years the diaconate had become a local church boardfor charity and/or finances and administration in much ofProtestantism, and an interim internship for the priesthood inCatholicism. There were glimmers of more: the service-fellowshipproclaimed by the Lutheran and Reformed deaconnesses in Europe, and the United Presbyterian insistence that once a person was setaside/had hands laid on him or her as a deacon, that rite wasnever be repeated when once again a person was chosen a deaconin a new parish. This meant that the servanthood element was notforgotten on the one hand, and the special ordained character wasremembered on the other. \nWhat has happened in recent years is the emphasis on thediaconate as an ordained office,an Order of Deacons, while atthe same time finding its character and identity in the ministryof service. This has happened in different ways to differentpersons. There have been steps backward as well as steps forward. \nWhat we have done in this work is to take three Episcopal/Anglican jurisdictions and one Roman Catholic, and to edit or \n3) \nproduce case histories of the diaconal programs working in eachof the four.We have been interested in looking at the situationin the diocese, the understanding of the diaconate there, and thecommitment to diaconal ministry. We have gone lookings for waysof dealing with the issues of screening, training, deployment, and support. And we have looked for problems and failures aswell as successes. For the revival of the diaconate is stilla budding thing in our time. We expect to find at least as manytroubles as victories. And we know people can learn from bothsuccesses and failures. \nThe Episcopal Church in the USA often operates in threeyear phases, because of the triennial pause that is caused byits General Convention,or legislative assembly. This met in1976 in Minneapolis and is meeting in 1979 again in Denver. The triennium of 1970-73 saw women \"deaconnesses\"set apartby bishops with the laying on of hands affirmed as fully withinthe historic diaconate. The 1973-76 triennium saw the CentralHouse for Deaconnesses within the denomination change into theNational Center for the Diaconate, male and female,by promotingthe diaconate, educating the church, and supporting deacons inministry. In this process,Frances Zielinski and Jean Mancini, staff of the center, conducted a study which revealed that theseveral hundred permanent deacons in the Episcopal Church USAcould roughly be divided into two sorts:those who found theiridentity mostly in liturgical matters, who were on the whole abit in turmoil, and often seeking to \"advance\"to the priesthood;and those who found their basic identity in an ordained ministry \nof service, who were happy as clams, and then focused this ministryby liturgical service at the altar more me","cbCaig11xVPk6SMx","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaig11xVPk6SMx","pdf",4088759,46,"English","# Table of Contents\n## Section 1 Introduction\n## Section 2 Central Florida - A Diocesan Revival\n## Section 3 Louisiana - Push and Pull\n## Section 4 Western Massachusetts - Small and Ecumenical\n## Section 5 Washington - Roman Catholic Pioneer\n## Epilogue","[{\"question\":\"What does the document say about the diaconate’s identity in the modern era?\",\"answer\":\"It describes the diaconate as coming to life in contemporary Christianity by finding its identity while puzzling and serving, and by proclaiming servanthood through word and deed.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the document explain recent emphasis on the diaconate?\",\"answer\":\"It says recent years have emphasized the diaconate as an ordained office and an Order of Deacons, while simultaneously defining its character through ministry of service.\"},{\"question\":\"What are the purposes of using case histories as presented here?\",\"answer\":\"The document lists three uses: opening up a subject, developing analysis of the subject, and making decisions that lead to a course of action.\"}]","DEACONS AND DIOCESES - Selected Case Histories - Table of Contents | PDF",116]
