D&D SWASHBUCKLER CLASS ii \nD&D Swashbuckler \nClass \nIntroduction \nWith the advent of the Basic DUNGEONS & \nDRAGONS fantasy role-playing game (BD&D) -- \nbefore ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS \n(AD&D) 1st and 2nd Editions, and D&D 3rd \nEdition, the character classes: fighter, magic \nuser, thief, elf, dwarf, and halfling were easy \nto customise and create new classes. When \nrunning a piratical BD&D game, I needed a \nnew swashbuckler class, so I sent a draft to \nGary Gygax who said that what I created was, \n`quite good' --and he then made refinements. \nSwashbuckler was not a class in D&D and \nwas never published for BD&D (and to my \nknowledge, AD&D 1st Edition), which includes \nthe first 150 issues of Dragon magazine and \nall AD&D (1st Edition) game supplements-- \nlet alone by Gygax in any form , by his creation \nor consultation. Therefore, I now release this \nnew class, adapted to D&D 5th edition. \nThe swashbuckler already appears in my free \nD&D Compendium but it appears below in \nexpanded form, specifically with notes of \nGygax's refinements. For those readers \ninterested in customising or creating new \nclasses, refer to How to Create Customised \nCharacter Classes for D&D. \nThe recent Ghosts of Saltmarsh supplement can easily tie in with the Swashbuckler class. \nOn the next page, class characteristics in red \nare Gygax's suggestions verbatim. \nNot for resale. D&D SWASHBUCKLER CLASS 3 \nSwashbuckler Character \nClass for D&D 5th Edition \nSWASBUCKLER CLASS \nCHARACTERISTICS \nHit Dice (HD): d8 \nArmor: light, medium, and shields. \nWeapons: simple, hand crossbows, \nlongswords, rapiers, short swords. Note that \nthe swashbuckler inflicts double damage from \nany throwing missiles, with specially designed \nthrowing missiles gaining +1 to hit. (The DM \nmay wish to increase this damage level-by \nlevel like a Rogue's sneak attack damage) . \nClass Abilities: gains only Battlemaster, or \nChampion or Scout features of the Fighter \nclass. \nAdditional Class Abilities: Roguish Archetype \n(Thief) . \nExtra Abilities: can climb ropes, trees, poles, \nand anything else easily and speedily. They \ncan swing on ropes one-handed and attack \nthus,. They can swing and drop, or leap or \neven fall and tumble-drop for progressively \ngreater distances as they increase in level: 10' \nthrough 4th-level, 20' 4th through 8th, etc. \nNimbleness: may move through the space of \na larger creature without provoking attacks of \nopportunity. \nThe Swashbuckler has the same proficiency \nbonus as the Fighter.
