one day.Flinging himself fromhis horse,he let out a yell. \n\"Polly!Tim!Davy!\"he shouted. \nAt once Mrs.Crockett and her two sturdy sons came rushing up to him. While the boys huggedtheir father,he smiled rather sadly at his wife.\"The news isn't too good,Polly,\"said the greatesthunter and scout who ever lived.“General Andy Jackson is calling for volunteers to help fight theCreek Indians. Some of the boys and I have joined up.Now,now,\"he added hastily,\"it isn'tfor long.Just sixty days, that's all. It's my duty to help old Hickory-Face Jackson to stop the var-mints.Come,send me on my way with a smile,eh?” \nNaturally Mrs.Crockett and the boys were very sad,but they managed to smile bravely and, when Davy's friend,Georgie Russel, came riding up singing a song, they finally sent the greathunter away as cheerfully as they could.Davy waved until his log cabin was out of sight and thengrinned as he listened to Georgie's song: \n“Davy Crockett born on a mountain-top in Tennessee,Greenest State in the land of the free;Off through the woods he's a-marching along,Itching for fighting and righting a wrong.” \nThey were soon joined by other volunteers and, after a long weary ride, caught up with GeneralJackson's army in a new camp in Creek Indian territory. \n\"Ho!Ho!\"said those in the camp, when Davy and his friends reached it at last.\"If it's a realmeal you're looking for, boys, you've come to the wrong place. We've no meat at all and old HickoryFace won't let anyone hunt with a rifle. Why?Because a shot is likely to bring a horde of howlingCreeks about our ears.\" \nDavy and Georgie Russel didn’t wait any longer.Grinning cheerfully, they rowed back acrossthe river into enemy territory and, armed only with a knife, vanished into the woods in search of areally big bear. \n“What?\"roared General Jackson, when he heard the news.\"I've been waiting for that scoutand now you tell me that he's hunting bear with nothing but a knife.I want that Crockett fellow,Major Norton, and I want him NOW!”And old Hickory Face pounded the table in front of him.“Fetch him, even if you have to cross the river yourself.” \n\"Y-yes,s-sir!\"stammered the unlucky major, and, taking two or three men,off he went acrossthe river. \nAt that very moment, believe it or not, there was Davy Crockett standing in front of a good-sizedbear and just grinning at the beast.Once, when he had been a little fellow,he had tried grinningcreatures into submission, and now he figured he'd try it on a bear. \n“CROCKETT!DAVY CROCKETT!”came a shout from the major,as he arrived at theriver bank in his boat. \n\"Now you’ve done it!\"roared an angry Davy,as the bear, alarmed by the shouting, took offinto the underbush.\"You've spoilt everything. Now I'll have to go after it with my knife.\"Andhe dashed into the bushes. \nand scout to announce that the bear wasall ready to be carried into the camp. \nThis was soon done, and at last General Andy Jackson and the scout were face to face. \n\"Huh!\"grunted the fierce old fighter whom men called old Hickory Face.\"You seem to be theman for me,Crockett. Now listen.Major Norton is taking a party into enemy territory to findout what those redskins are up to.I want you to scout for him. Will you volunteer for the job?” \n\"Sure!”said Davy promptly.\"But I'd like a friend of mine,Georgie Russel,to go withme.\" \nThe general agreed at once, and thus,at daybreak the very next morning,Davy Crockett, withGeorgie riding just behind him,led a squad of regular troops in command of Major Norton into Creekterritory.Trouble began almost at once. \n\"Better get your men to re-prime their powder,Major!”said Davy.\"Reckon it's got wetfording the river.” \n\"Bah!”rapped out the officer.“I'm in charge here,Crockett.I'll give the orders.\" \n\"Suits me!”came the reply.“Order them to keep close so's not to leave a big trail;tel","cbCainIsQIDKHJlo","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainIsQIDKHJlo","pdf",2086554,24,"English","#
