This guide gets you started with the DASH eating plan. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. \nThe resource explains: \n• High blood pressure and illness. \n• DASH eating plan and the effects on blood pressure. \n• How to practice the DASH eating plan each day. \n1 \nHow are blood pressure, illness and diet linked? \nWhen the heart beats, blood is pushed out into the body. Blood pressure measures how hard blood flow pushes against artery walls. On a blood pressure monitor, the force is recorded as two numbers. \n• Systolic pressure. This is the force measured when your heart beats, called systole. It is the top number on a monitor. \n• Diastolic pressure. This is the force measured in your arteries between heartbeats, called diastole. It is the bottom number on a monitor. \nBlood pressure can rise and fall throughout the day. But if your blood pressure is high all the time, that pressure can damage arteries. \n2 \nBlood pressure stages \nBlood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) . Normal blood pressure measures below 120 over 80 mm Hg. As blood pressure goes up, the increase is split into stages. \n\n| Blood pressure | Systolic pressure (mm Hg) | And/Or | Diastolic pressure (mm Hg) |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| Normal | Below 120 | And | Below 80 |\n| Higher than normal (elevated) | 120 to 129 | And | Below 80 |\n| Stage 1 hypertension | 130 to 139 | Or | 80 to 89 |\n| Stage 2 hypertension | 140 or higher | Or | 90 or higher |\n\nBlood pressure that is 130/80 mm Hg or higher all the time is called hypertension. High blood pressure causes arteries to thicken, harden and scar. If arteries are damaged, the heart must work harder to pump blood to the body. \nOver time, if hypertension is not controlled, the high pressure can lead to heart and kidney disease. It can lead to stroke and blindness. Hypertension is linked to memory loss, also called dementia. \nOne way to control hypertension is to manage what you eat and drink. \nWhat is the DASH eating plan? \nDASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. It is a lifelong plan to help lower your blood pressure and the chance of illnesses linked to hypertension. \nKey parts of the DASH eating plan include: \n• Fruits, vegetables and whole grains. \n• Fat-free or low-fat dairy products that are low in sodium. \n• Fish, poultry, beans and nuts that are low in sodium. \nThe DASH plan limits foods high in sodium, a mineral found mostly in salt. The eating plan also limits saturated fats, trans fats, alcohol and added sugars. \nThe DASH plan helps manage blood pressure. But if you take blood pressure medicine, don’t stop unless you talk with your healthcare professional. \n3 \nDASH, salt and blood pressure \nSalt in the food you eat comes from processed food, dining out or adding salt to food at the table. Too much salt can cause your body to hold on to water. If your body retains more water in blood vessels, your blood volume goes up. That puts stress on the heart and arteries. In people who are salt sensitive, taking in too much sodium can quickly raise blood pressure. \nDASH goals are for a sodium range between 1,500 and 2,300 milligrams (mg) of salt a day. One teaspoon of table salt has about 2,300 milligrams of sodium. Your healthcare team tells you what sodium limit is right for you. \nEven if you take blood pressure medicine, you still may need to limit salt. Do not stop or make changes to your blood pressure medicine without talking to your healthcare professional. \nTips to cut back on salt \nSalt can hide in processed foods, restaurant meals and even in some items you cook at home. Choose foods that are naturally low in sodium. \nFoods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains listed in the DASH eating plan are low sodium.
