The follow-up to Dark Imperium, Plague War by Guy Haley, tells the story of the Indomitus Crusade's war against Traitor Primarch Mortarion and his Death Guard legions. In contrast to book one, which was criticized for being rushed and missing opportunities to engage new readers, book two steadies the ship and drives the narrative towards a potentially enjoyable trilogy. The most compelling aspect is the fight to convert Roboute Guilliman into an Imperial Cult believer, with Haley delving into this theme with aplomb. The internal ideological war within the crusade mirrors that of the wider Imperium. Mortarion's traitor brother and Nurgle allies take center stage in a much more effective way than in book one. Haley masterfully writes the Nurgle scenes, conveying filth and disgust while also showcasing an understanding of its essence – life, death, rebirth. The story excels at its pacing, incorporating well-timed nods to iconic characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, particularly those from the Horus Heresy era. Plague War is a significant improvement over Dark Imperium, with the people of the Indomitus Crusade facing both physical and ideological strain as they confront their perceived god. The conflict between Guilliman and Mortarion is finally underway, with Guilliman determined to rebuild Ultramar by waging war on the treacherous Death Guard. But the intervention of a greater power threatens all Roboute Guilliman works for. In the realms of Greater Ultramar, the battle for the Imperium rages on. Intent on rebuilding his home realm and using it as a base to reconstruct the ravaged stellar empire of mankind, Guilliman proceeds with his war against Mortarion and his Death Guard Traitor Legion. However, when he brings his brother to battle upon the diseased plains of Parmenio, the intervention of this greater power in their fraternal struggle threatens to upend Guilliman's understanding of the galaxy and his place within it. This is the second novel in Haley's Dark Imperium trilogy, packed with revelations and action. As a fan of the Warhammer 40k setting, I enjoyed both books immensely. The non-action scenes are particularly interesting, providing insight into the Death Guard and their internal conflicts. Meanwhile, the battle scenes are well-written and constructed, showcasing trench warfare, titan battles, hordes of daemons, and a confrontation between two primarchs. The tension between Mortarion, Typhus, and Nurgle's daemons is palpable, highlighting their conflicting personal agendas and egos. This is exemplified in the dialogue between daemon Ku'gath and Mortarion: 'Seven this and three that, he's obsessed! As if numbers excuse him of his connection to the warp. Numbers! The lengths Mortarion goes to distance himself from sorcery are laughable... He is a liar, and, and, he insults me! I am an artist!' Ku'gath grumbles, 'Mortarion is a troubled being. He keeps his jealousies to himself, but mark my words, Septicus, and mark them well, I suspect this entire campaign is the result of him wishing to prove his fortitude over that of his brother, and nothing more than that.' Ultimately, Chaos's continued inability to exert total control and achieve total victory is due in part to their own internal conflicts. This second novel in Haley's Dark Imperium trilogy is a must-read for fans of Warhammer 40k, offering revelations, action, and insight into the Death Guard's twisted world. Haley seems to be at the helm of the post-Great Rift storyline, and he's doing a great job of moving the WH40k narrative forward.
