adherents of tradi-tional Christian,Jewish,Muslim and other faith traditionsunderstand knowledge to be merely a social construct.Whilescience and faith may differ in method and substance, eachrequires the other.Questions of world view, method for un-derstanding,and the implications of knowledge for daily lifeand the practice of faith and ministry are all in play. \nOur world today forces a science-religion dialogue.Forexample, environmental issues draw us to a discussion ofpopulation and consumption.Theology is challenged as neverbefore by the concept of a \"full earth\"and science by thequestion of global sustainability. The inability to find a tech-nological \"fix\"for these and other factors which are aggra-vating the global environment draw science into dialoguewith such disciplines as economics and politics, the humanfactors which propel us into debate over resource allocationand land reform. The pressure for science-religion dialoguecomes from other domain as well, from biotechnology,cos-mology,and an array of technologies that are altering ourworld. \nSome years ago chemist and philosopher Michael Polaynibegan to show us one way to begin to bring the sciences intoconversation with religion, through a holistic approach toknowledge, understood tacitly, and unknown by looking sim- \nply at component parts(Personal Knowledge,1964).De-spite their own skepticism in different directions, science andreligion were drawn into dialogue by astrophysicist StephenHawking and astronomer Robert Jastrow through the BigBang Theory as it emerged at the end of the twentieth cen-tury.Such theoretical work and discoveries from QuantumTheory to Chaos Theory have stimulated contemporary sci-ence-religion debate and have driven physicist FreemanDyson to ask whether the universe knew we were coming(Infinite in All Directions,1988).Another physicist,PaulDavies, says that science has advanced to the point whereformerly religious questions can now be seriously tackled byscientists(The Mind of God:The Scientific Basis for a Ratio-nal World,1992). \nOf course, the question still remains about how thelanguage of science(facts)and that of religion(values)areto relate to each other.Ian Barbour suggests categories ofconflict and independence which give way to dialogue and, perhaps, integration.Preferring \"contact\"and \"confirmation\"to Barbour's latter two modes of interaction, theologian John \nF.Haught helpfully develops his typology in relation to a num-ber of different scientific disciplines and issues.Arguing
