Five weeks into her marriage, Elizabeth battles persistent physical exhaustion and nausea while trying to meet the household’s exacting expectations, manage guests and correspondence, and anticipate the arrival of Lady Catherine. Her struggle remains largely unspoken, even as Darcy watches her closely with concern and determination to protect her.","This is a work of fiction. The words seemed to reach her from a great distance, muffled as though she were underwater. Lamb. Turbot. Asparagus in cream sauce . Her stomach turned at the mention of the cream . \n“The asparagus, Mrs. Reynolds,” she managed, her voice perfectly level despite the wave of nausea rising in her throat.“Perhaps prepared more simply? With butter and lemon only.” \n“Of course, Mrs. Darcy.” If the housekeeper noticed anything amiss, she was too well-trained to show it.“And for the fish course on Thursday?” \nElizabeth’s fingers tightened on the table’s edge. Five weeks. She had been mistress of Pemberley for only five weeks, and already the weight of it pressed upon her shoulders like a physical thing. Mrs. Reynolds was waiting, patient and deferential, for guidance Elizabeth was not entirely certain she could provide. Behind her fatigue and the persistent churning in her stomach, she tried to summon what she knew of Darcy’s preferences, of what the season offered, of what would be appropriate for a dinner that included the vicar and his wife. \n“The turbot will do nicely,” she said at last.“With a plain sauce .” \nMrs. Reynolds made a note in her household book.“Very good, ma’am. Now, regarding the linens for the guest chambers—” \nA sharp ache bloomed at the base of Elizabeth’s skull. She had already reviewed the linens yesterday, hadn’t she? Or had that been two days ago? The past week had begun to blur together, each day a repetition of the last—rising early despite the leaden heaviness in her limbs, meeting with Mrs. Reynolds, responding to correspondence, overseeing the still room, reviewing accounts, planning menus, receiving callers, presiding over dinner, and falling into bed each night with such profound exhaustion that even her dreams felt laborious. \n“Mrs. Darcy?” \nElizabeth blinked.“Forgive me. The linens, yes. What did you wish to discuss?” \nA flicker of concern crossed Mrs. Reynolds’s face before her professional mask returned.“Only that the damask in the Rose Room has \nworn quite thin in places. I wondered if you wished to replace it before Lady Catherine is expected next month.” \nLady Catherine. Elizabeth suppressed a shudder that had nothing to do with her current malaise.“Yes. Please see to it. Something of the finest quality, but not ostentatious.” \n“I shall order samples sent from London.” \n“Thank you, Mrs. Reynolds. That will be all for this morning.” \nThe housekeeper hesitated.“If I may, ma’am, you look rather pale. Perhaps you ought to rest before luncheon?” \n“I am quite well,” Elizabeth said, hearing the sharpness in her own voice and immediately regretting it. Mrs. Reynolds had been nothing but kind, welcoming her to Pemberley with a warmth that had helped ease those first awkward days as a new bride in a great house.“Forgive me . I slept poorly last night. But I have correspondence to attend to, and Lady Ashworth will be calling at eleven.” \nMrs. Reynolds curtsied, though her expression remained troubled.
