Theatre,Moscow, where she became one ofthe leading soloists at an early age.Elvin came to England in 1946 andjoined the Company as a principal soloist.I have shown Elvin here asthe Bluebird, for that was the first role she danced for our nationalballet and one in which she was immediately an outstanding success. She has since risen to be in the front rank ofour own ballerinas.Amongstclassical roles,Elvin now dances Odette-Odile in Le Lac des Cygnes, thePrincess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, and Giselle. In modern ballet,Elvin's best leading roles are in such works as Frederick Ashton's Cin-derella,Scènes de Ballet, and Balanchine's Ballet Imperial;also as theyoung married woman in Frederick Ashton's Daphnis and Chloe shegives a most exciting and voluptuous performance. An excellent tech-nician and good actress, and a sensitive artist,Violetta with her perfectlyproportioned body and regal bearing,is capable of becoming one of thegreatest ballerinas of the day. \nPlate 2.Farron was born in London in 1922 of English parents, won ascholarship into the Sadler's Wells Ballet School, from which she gradu-ated into the Company, and at the age of fourteen created, among herfirst roles, the little dog in A Wedding Bouquet,1936.From then onFarron has danced a great many leading roles, among them the BetrayedGirl in The Rake's Progress,The Red Queen in Checkmate,Mlle Angot,Ballet Imperial, and the Queen in The Sleeping Beauty. She is an excel-lent actress, she has poise, dramatic timing, and theatrical sense, herdancing is good, and her style impeccable—she is as popular in purelydancing roles as she is in mimetic ones.To appreciate Farron's artistryto its full extent one should see her in such diverse roles as the prostitutein Miracle in the Gorbals, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella, the Queenin The Sleeping Beauty, and as Mlle Angot. Each of these roles showscompletely different yet equally brilliant facets of her art.As the Foster-mother in Andrée Howard's Mirror for Witches,Julia Farron createdone of the finest dramatic roles I have seen of late in the modern idiom. \nPlate 3.Margot Hookham was born in Reigate of British parents on18 May 1919,and as Margot Fonteyn is universally acknowledged to bethe world's greatest ballerina outside Russia. So much has been writtenand so many books(including three of my own)have been publishedabout this dancer, that it is now somewhat difficult to write about her. However,I think it is correct to state that,at the age of 32,she was theyoungest dancer to have been acclaimed the greatest living ballerinaand she is the first English ballerina to have been officially honoured byher country. The greatness of Fonteyn's art lies as much in her characteras in her dancing;she has a rare simplicity of nature,a deep-rooted loveof dancing, which she never talks about, and she is generous in mindand deed alike;she loves all the good things of life, yet when workingshe shows amazing control over herself. The best of music, both of so-called high-brow and low-brow,appeals to her;her tastes are ma","cbCaicL1pF7nzuND","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicL1pF7nzuND","pdf",2931638,36,"English","# Contents\n## Violetta Elvin\n## Julia
