Her friend, Melita lingered a few moments before moving on to her own area. “I hear there has been turmoil in some of the cities north of here. Some outspoken Jew is proclaiming another religion. I love living in Athens with its emphasis on education and the arts. I hope this fanatic doesn’t come here and stir things up.”  \nDamaris turned to Melita, who looked so stylish in her lovely blue blouse. “Yes, I love Athens, too. I so enjoy dealing in all the fine merchandise coming in from the ships daily. And I find it quite stimulating interacting with the many tourists. Being so near to the Areopagus  \ntoo. But, I feel there is more to life than all this,”she ended with a sigh.  \n“Well, you need to study Epicurus more. I think he had the right idea.”  \n“Maybe I’ll do that. I just feel like something is missing from my life.”  \nFrom her vantage point Damaris could listen in on the lively discussions of learned men that took place here in the marketplace. She was struggling with what she believed about God. Athens was a place that extolled myriad gods. It was said that there were more gods in Athens than men. There was even an altar to'the unknown god' . She often heard the Epicureans and the Stoics extolling their ideas,  \nbut she had recently heard some talk about a Jesus of Nazareth. She longed to hear more.  \nDemas, a wiry merchant a few booths over, ambled over to Damaris' stall. Leaning an elbow on the display shelf, he asked, \"Have you  \nheard? Paul, that Christian babbler, is coming here.\"  \n\"No, but I have heard that he was run out of Philippi, and then Berea, because of his teachings.”  \n\"Well, keep your ears open. You might get a chance to hear what he has to say.\"  \nPaul had arrived in the city of Athens early that morning, and began familiarizing himself with the popular area. Wending his way to the synagogue, he was aghast at the untold number of statues, temples, and shrines along the way. How these people needed to hear of Jesus!  \nFinding the synagogue, he looked for a few God-fearing Greeks. They invited him to teach and so he did. He told them about Jesus coming to earth, living among people and teaching God's commands. He told them about the merciless crucifixion and burial. But that was not the end of the story! On the third day,  \nwas raised from the dead, and was seen by his disciples and over five hundred people at onetime. And he, Paul, had had an encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. As Damaris heard the philosophers discussing this, her heart felt enlivened. She wanted to know more.  \nThe next day was bright and sunny in Athens. Damaris could hear the crowds gathering at the synagogue. How she wished she could go and join them. Paul’s message was intriguing.  \nThen the sounds of a moving crowd caught her attention. Damaris looked up. What was happening? The crowd was moving her way. She heard someone mumble, \"What is this babbler trying to say? He seems to be advocating foreign gods.\"  \nA great crowd of Athenians and foreigners swept past Damaris' booth. In the midst she spotted a small, balding man with a prominent nose.
