AFTER LATEST ULTRAMARATHON \n4 Daly Express Wednesday,September30,2026 \nCOMMENT \nSIR JOHN \nREDWOOD \nFormer Tory \nCabinet Minister \nWHY are so many claiming thatabolishing the triple lock willyield big savings? \nIt is not going to solve ourdebt crisis and pay for free socialcare for all. They are never askedhow much the move will saveand rarely tell us what they willreplace it with. \nIf they did we would soon seethat tampering with the triplelock will yield few savings in thenext few years and still leavegovernment struggling tomanage its stretched finances. \nI assume none of the pension \ncutters want to end an annual \nuprating of some sort. \nWith high inflation a low \npension would soon become \nhopelessly too small. \nMaybe they wish to removethe provision that in a down yearwith low inflation the pensionshould not go up by 2.5%. \nMaybe they just want to \nupdate the pension in line with \nwages,or just in line with prices. \nAny of these solutions will stillleave in place most of theincreases pensioners currentlyenjoy, greatly limiting thesavings. The government actuaryhas said if we stopped the triplelock the savings might get toE2billion by 2030-31. \n# Surplus\n\nIf they just removed the \n2.5%promise,and wage andprice and inflation stay as nowor went up,there would be nosavings at all. \nIf the government stoppedrecruiting civil servants andstarted to get back the publicsector productivity lost since2019 they could tackle a E50bnblack hole in our accounts. \nIf they asked the Bank ofEngland to rein in its forecastaverage losses of E2Obn a yearthey could save more.If theyadopted Conservative proposalsfor benefits reform they couldreduce costs by E23bn. \nSome of these wannabe \nreformers seem unaware the \nstate pension is based on \npeople's contributions. \nEveryone's National Insurance \ncontributions are paid in to the \nNational Insurance Fund, which \nin turn pays the pensions. \nThe good news is the fund hasa large surplus at its 2026valuation,and is forecast to havea rising surplus for the next fiveyears whilst paying out thepension with triple lock rises. \nThose on state pensions see itas an entitlement based on whatthey have put in.There are manybetter ways of cutting theexcessive debt.Cheeseparingthe triple lock saves too littlemoney at too big a political cost. That is why both Conservativesand Labour promised to keep itin the last election. \nalso hit out at the Premier's confer-ence announcements, saying:“Iwill cut foreign aid, migrant wel-fare,welfare fraud and mad net-zero spending.Andy Burnham willcut your pension.” \nThe Express Save Our PensionT","cbCaikgEwpEFhpZw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikgEwpEFhpZw","pdf",23381934,"English","# Comment\n## Sir John
