The introduction explains the spiritual value of regular Scripture reading, the encouragement given for clergy and laity, and the goal of grounding souls in divine truth. It outlines a two-year cycle aligned with the Church year: Old Testament readings follow the liturgical seasons, while New Testament readings arrange the books roughly by order of composition, with special seasons drawing from the New Testament.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/religion-spirituality/","Religion that continues to grow more widespreadamong the faithful,a spiritual exercise valued evermore highly by priests and religious. The Holy See hasgiven clergy and people alike every encouragement tosteep their souls in the word of God in order to findthere a pure and never-failing source of divine truthand spiritual strength. It is hoped that the reading plansuggested here will prove helpful in bringing this aimnearer its fulfillment. The two-year cycle of readingsfor the Old Testament is based on the Church year, while the New Testament plan presents the variousbooks in their approximate order of composition.Al-though originally intended as an aid in planning thedaily public reading of the Scriptures in religious com-munities,it will serve equally well as a guide for privateBible-reading. \n# DAILY BIBLE READINGTHE OLD TESTAMENT\n\nA TWo-YEAR CYCLE BASED ON THE CHURCH YBAR \nFirst yearSecond yearADVENT AND CHRISTMASTIDBIsaiasdayPsalmsdaySEPTUAGESIMA AND former can be found in many editions of the Bible. The best known example of the latter is the RomanBreviary. It provides Old Testament readings for eachseason and period of the Church year, except for thetwo periods devoted especially to commemorating\"Christ with us'\"—the seasons of Christmas and Easter, when the regular Scripture readings are taken from theNew Testament. \nBut there are several reasons for suggesting a newreading program. The readings given in the breviary,on the one hand, are necessarily fragmentary and veryincomplete. For as its name suggests, this official prayerbook of the Church is designed as a comparatively brief, compact manual of daily prayer. So in its Bible readingsit aims at covering only the high points of Old Testa-ment history, prophecy and doctrine, and their fulfill-ment and perfection in the New Testament, that is tosay,in Christ. Thus, even for those who recite the divineoffice,it would be of great benefit to have the OldTestament read in full, and over and over through theyears, like the breviary itself. The Bible, too, couldthen become a vade mecum, growing ever more familiar, and as a result the breviary readings and especially thePsalms would take on new richness and meaning.More- \n# DAILY BIBLE READING\n\nover,it is very difficult if not impossible to gain a satis-factory understanding or appreciation of the New Testa-ment without first acquiring a close familiarity with theno less divinely inspired Old Testament. For the NewLaw has been built on this Old Law,which Christcame not to destroy, but to fulfill
