 \nAnother night came.Ryunosuke was lying on his backresting his head on the alcove,and took up a ittle bookto kill time.Presently he heard some one shown in theDext room:一  \n“This way,please.”  \nHe heard only the voice of the maid,but judged by the  \nDAI-BOSATSU TOGE  \nfootfall that it was not a single guest who took the nextroom.  \n“Bath is open,”said the maid.  \n\"Yes!?You take it first,\"came in a man's voice.  \n“After you,dear,”answered a woman.  \n“You both take together,”advised the maid.  \nThe guests seemed to be a young man and a youngwoman judging from their voices,which Ryunosuke thoughthe had heard before.So he put down the book.  \nRyunosuke soon thought,without listening to the voicesany further,that they must be the pair he saw at the tea-stall where the keeper made match-ropes.A queer feelingcame over him.  \n\"Too soon for having been on Grand Shrine pilgrimage,\"thought Ryunosuke.The inn was very quiet that night,it was like lodging in a big temple.Keeping himselfstill,Ryunosuke overheard the whispering of the youngcouple.  \n\"We shall reach Kioto,to-morrow.\"  \n“Yes,but what of that,”the man sighed.  \n“I must see Miss Yuki,your sister,at once,”said thevoice that resembled the voice of Hama.  \n\"What's the good of it?There's no help.Ah-a!I'drather die here than go back.”  \n“Yes,indeed we had better……”  \nHere their voices ceased to be heard.  \n‘Ah,well,old,old story,'Ryunosuke thought.  \n“I,too,can't go back to Kameyama,now.”  \nMIBU &SHIMABARA  \n\"Nor I to Kioto.\"  \n\"Iet's kill ourselves,let’s kill ourselves\"came in rathera shrill voice.They possibly did not know that some onewas in the next room.  \nThe man said'let us die,'and the woman did not pro-test,it showed that the woman was not unwilling.It wasnow quite clear that love-and-lover suicide was what theconsultation of the two would lead to.  \n“Then,dear!”  \n“Shin-san,I have made up my mind,now.”  \n“Forgive dear,forgive,I have no right.to ask you somuch.\"  \n“Oh yes,you have.”  \n“Last cups,dear.”  \nNo voices were heard now but sobs for some time.  \n“Haven't you got anything to say?If you have,writeit.”  \n“Yes,just a word for parents.”  \n“Then write carefully,a beautiful letter,not an uglyletter;we don't want to be laughed at after.”  \nThe sound of an opening pen-case,and the rustling of aroll of letter paper were heard plainly.Ryunosuke heardall,yet no pity for the couple stirred him.  \nThe other day,the woman thanked him profusely as ifhe had saved her life,for a little service he rendered torescue her out of a predicament.Now she said she wouldlay her life for the man.Was her life so cheap!?
