to be secn how long this boom will last and what impactit will have on intellectual life.Certainly,within the fragmented institutional config-uration of the academic left,cultural studies holds special intellectual promise becauseit explicicly attempts to cut across diverse social and political interests and address manyof the struggles within the current scene.As Lata Mani notes in her essay in this volume,in its utopian moments cultural studics sometines imagines “a location where the newpolitics of difference-racial,sexual,cultural,transnational-can combine and be artic-ulated in all their dazzling plurality.\"At the same time,it is undoubtedly cultural studies'material and economic promise that contributes,as much as its intellectual achievement,to its current vogue.In the United States,where the boom is especially strong,manyacademic institutions-presses,journals,hiring committees,conferences,university cur-ricula-have created significant investment opportunities in cultural studies,sometimesin ignorance of its history,its practitioners,its relation to traditional disciplines,and itslife outside the academy.  \nThe present book is partly occasioned by this explosion of interest in culturalstudies.It seeks to identify the dimensions of cultural studies and its varied effects,todiscuss cultural studies in relation to its intellectual history,its varying definitions,itscurent afiliations and affinities and diverse objects of study,and its possible futures.Here we introduce the field of cultural studies,describe the goals of the book,and offera \"user's guide\"to the essays it includes.The section divisions in the user's guidcthemselves provide a rough map not only of che overlapping subject matter of che bookbut also of the major categories of current work in cultural studies:the history of culturalstudies,gender and sexuality,narionhood and national identicy,colonialism and post-colonialism,race and ethnicity,popular culture and its postmodernage.But cultural studies can only partially and uneasily be identified by such dorainsof interest,since no list can constrain the topics cultural studies may address in the future.  \nOne way to understand cultural studies is to employ the traditional strategies bywhich disciplines stake out their territories and theoretical paradigns mark their dif-ference:by claiming a particular
