Focusing on Indonesia, the study examines whether and how the staging of ethnic cultures changes in the Reform era, especially through inclusion and exclusion practices at the Jakarta theme park Taman Mini. It connects these shifts to democratization and decentralization, and argues for a globally oriented inter- or transcultural Indonesian identity.","Cultural Politics of Representation in Contemporary representation of diversity is a crucial challenge for all countries andespecially for post-colonial nations.Accordingly, the politics of multiethnic representationas well as multicultural rhetoric is constantly reformulated and adapted to new conditions, both locally and globally. \nCultural theme parks are a typical arena for the display of multiculturality. In the caseof Indonesia it is of special interest to investigate whether and in what ways the publicstaging of ethnic cultures has changed in the reform era(since I998).This includes aspectsof inclusion and exclusion.Which echnic groups are defined as being constitutive for theIndonesian nation and how are they represented in the central theme park,Taman Mini,in Jakarta? In which ways are the political processes ofdemocratisation and decentralisationreflected in the organisation of Taman Mini, which used to be a main icon of Suharto's NewOrder regime? \nThis paper suggests that there is a need for Indonesia to re-imagine itselfand to refashiona globally oriented multicultural—or,even better, transcultural—identity for the future.Popular public spaces like cultural theme parks have the potential to be appropriate placesfor such innovative visions. \n## Keywords\n\nAnthropology of Indonesia;cultural politics;theme park;ethnic Chinese \n## Introduction\n\nEthnic and cultural pluralism must always be organised and managed. In par-ticular,the relatively young post-colonial nation-states are confronted withthe challenge of defining and ordering both local diversity and national iden-tity.The public understanding of history and issues of cultural identity oftenbecome sources of confict. But the former colonisers are also facing the task \n◎ Koninklijke Bril NV,Leiden,2011 \nof dealing with a diverse population of migrants and citizens from manybackgrounds. In general and beyond nation-states,we have to recognise thattransnational mobility, globalisation and global cultural fows create,on theone hand, more exchange and mixbut also,on the other hand, new approachesto identity politics. This provokes questions about the representation andongoing negotiations of cultural concepts—not only in official and seriouscontexts but in popularised realms as well. The formation of ideas of'Self'and'Other'and of possibilities to bridge them is not only influenced by politicalstatements, scientific texts and didactical, institutionalised means and mea-sures,but by many media, art forms and expressive genres, and it also takesplace in the context of popular entertainment and enjoyment.Examples forpublic sites where ‘cultures'and ‘cultural differences'are packaged and dis-played—and thereby also defined—in a manner that combines amusementand education are cultural and ethnic theme parks which are widespread allover Asia.² \nThis article seeks to examine the case ofIndonesia as it is refected in TamanMini Indonesia Indah(Beautiful
