Please delete these notes before printing  \nCultivating Eru  \nEru is a vine with evergreen leaves which grows wild in tropical forests. The leaves are used as a vegetable in cooking, and the seeds can be roasted. The leaves contain a lot of protein and are highly nutritious. Many people earn money from picking and selling eru. But uncontrolled harvesting from the wild means that in some areas the plant is becoming scarce.  \nHowever, farmers can grow eru on their own land. This is better for the people who pick the crop, and for their customers, as it ensures a long-term supply. It is also better for the forests!  \nEru grows well on volcanic soils, or on sand or clay. It needs alot of water, but it does not like to have its roots in waterlogged soil.  \nEru seeds are slow to germinate, taking up to nine months todo so. Therefore it is much quicker for farmers to propagate the plants in a frame by means of cuttings.  \nAn eru cutting ready for the frame  \nYou can build a propagating frame from timber and some pieces of glass or polythene sheets. If you dig a trench in the front of the frame, you will be able to care for the young plants without bending. Try to build the frame near a water supply. It will save a lot of carrying!  \nAn eru propogating frame  \nLine the bottom of the frame with polythene, with a thin layer of sand on it for protection. Then cover it with a 3 inch (8 cm) layer of stones, then a 4 inch (9 cm) layer of gravel, and then a 3 inch (8 cm) layer of good soil and manure on top.  \nPush the cuttings into the soil, and water them twice a day. After 6 weeks, roots will have formed and you can transfer the plants into pots. After another 4 to 6 weeks, the young vines will be ready for planting out.  \nIn the wild, eru vines grow by climbing up around tree trunks. On farms, they need to be supported by poles.
