Are. Next.  \nThat’s what that look meant.  \nBecause I was next.  \nI was also the only one left.  \n***  \nThe nightmare I was living didn’t start as a nightmare.  \nNo, it was supposed to be a fun weekend.  \nMy wife Anna and I were joined by our best friends – who were also a couple – Jeff and Nicole. We’d known them for over a decade, and over those years we’d camped with them hundreds of times. We were in similar places in life. No kids. No pets. Unsure about what the future held, we rented a meager apartment downtown, only a few blocks from where Jeff and Nicole rented. Jeff ’s career was volatile, and in conversation he’d shared that they lived on the edge weekly. If the markets lowered or Middle East relations soured, he might be out of a job. So, they saved their pennies, didn’t eat out or go to the bar on weekends. Instead, they kept things minimal and spent their time in the great outdoors. Anna was in a similar situation. Her career was contract-based. And in those last few months and weeks of her contracts, we stressed and lost sleep, wondering if she’d be renewed or what would come next.  \nIt was through those shared fears and experiences that we became closer than if we simply met up with them weekly and bitched about our jobs. Our relationship was forged sitting around a fire, the mountains looming over us as the sun set and the stars shone.  \nThis fun weekend happened to be a long weekend. An extra day off thanks to someone dying a century ago.
