I figured out a long time ago that no one can hold their breath longer than those chicks.  \nConscious that the alcohol content in my bloodstream can likely start afire, I have to walk. The rest of the fuckers I call friends don’t have the dean as a mother, so they’re happily snoring. I can’t even catch a ride.  \nLuckily, the Shark House is one of the first buildings on our campus’s private drive, so it’ll only take me fifteen or twenty minutes, but the whole thing is offensive. As is sunlight. I should have taken the time to find my sunglasses.  \n“Watch out!” I hear from the left.  \nI turn, though my reflexes are way too slow to avoid the tornado on a collision course towards me, so I just accept my fate, staring dumbly at the  \npile of boxes rolling down the gentle slope—towards me.  \nMy eyes squint, and I consider whether I should sue whoever made the vesper punch yesterday, because clearly, I’m still tripping.  \nThe pain I expect never comes, because a video game character leaps into action, running way too fast, before throwing himself in the path between the tray of boxes and me, stopping it in its stride.  \nStraight platinum-blond hair, with dark roots, falling to hip level, a dark leather duster with white metallic shoulder pads, thigh-high boots, a fourfoot-long sword. The only thing that doesn’t fit is the fact that this Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII has tits under the leather harness.  \nI blink. Sephiroth is still there. Too short, and disturbingly hot, but nonetheless present.  \n“I should go back to bed,” I decide.  \nSephiroth huffs. “You could just have moved out of the way, you know.”  \nHis voice is all wrong. Sweet, with a bit of an accent I can’t quite place, and most definitely not the deep Japanese rumbles I remember from my geek days.  \nSo, what? That was a decent game. Quite frankly, I’d still play if the fifteenth hadn’t turned me off the franchise.  \nI wouldn’t actually do it in front of anyone I know, but it isn’t my fault if I’m surrounded by jocks and morons. I blame an accident of birth. I so happen to have an aptitude for physical activities, and people decided I was cool because of it, so at age fifteen, I joined organized team sports.  \nAt Rothford, my priorities are getting a good degree and connecting with the leaders of this rich-as-fuck town to guarantee my future. Unlike therest of the students living on our private drive, I am not rich enough to buy a small sovereign nation. We Crosses do all right, but all of us work for a living. I don’t have an endless trust fund to fall back on—mine is a small six figures.  \nI can’t quite break away from the jock persona I’ve cultivated for years, but I joined the most pathetic sport on campus in order to ensure I don’t have to waste too much energy on it: the hockey team.
